I cannot get these trees off my mind. What are they?

This triptych is by JoAnn Verburg, showing now at G. Gibson Gallery with Seattle painter Thuy-Van Vu. The scene is a plaza in Spoleto, Italy, where Verburg lives part of the year (the rest of it, she's in St. Paul, Minnesota). The photographs are large, 3-by-4-feet each. To create the soft focus, she uses a bellows on her camera, which has the effect of making the photographs feel embodied rather than machine-taken. It's funny how odd that feels to look at.
