And this surprises you why?

Because we all know NASCAR fans are paradigms of class and intelligence.

These are the same semi-permanently drunk NASCAR fans who have pickup trucks with Dixie flags and shotgun racks, aren't they?

Cato the Younger Younger 4
NASCAR fans; people fascinated by cars going around in circles over and over again.

And their t-bagging cousins/siblings here in WA wanted our Legislature to use tax subsidies to build a NASCAR track here

@7: one is the enabling wife of a war criminal. the other is a black lawyer wife of a black man. i can see why you would think there's equivalence.

@7 hate to burst your bubble, but even the most out-there lefty I know (not that many of them are baseball fans) thinks of Laura Bush as a closet liberal at best and a dim Stepford Wife at worst. Not worth the breath to boo.

@7: Lame comparison. Laura Bush killed a guy.

Two points -

Mariners opening day, 2011, Mike McGinn was booed.

Re: NASCAR fans -

FWIW, I have quite a bit of family that thoroughly enjoys NASCAR, and are also fans of both Barack and Michelle Obama, especially Michelle's focus on fighting childhood obesity.

So, keep on casting stones and wide nets. It's very productive.

That's right, Laura Bush killed a guy.

I remember about 10-15 years back, there was a marketing campaign to change the perception of NASCAR. It was supposed to be hip and relevant, with people from all walks of life enjoying it (sort of like the current "I'm a Mormon" campaign)

In all my years of working with people of all income levels, both here and in Iowa, I've yet to meet anyone who enjoys NASCAR.

Slight correction: I should have said that I've never met anyone who regards NASCAR as a "lifestyle", like the marketing campaign intended. I'm sure I have met people who are enthusiasts, but they didn't gush at me about it, like people do about things like Cornhusker football or scrapbookimg.

Great joke from 30 Rock, Jenna saying to Tracy: "I can't have sex with a black man or I'll lose my NASCAR endorsements."

NASCAR is for people who think professional sports have gotten too "politically correct".

While driving from Seattle to Spokane yesterday I tuned in some AM radio. There is an actual radio broadcast of NASCAR races. Once I got over the shock of it, I grew bored and changed the station to listen to the two ladies giving tarot and astrology readings on a call-in show.

I am not making any of this up.

Plenty of Democrats who like NASCAR let's not pretend its only the GOP who does, but yeah booing was classless and no there is no difference booking Michelle Obama and Laura Bush.

@ 18 - not currently in the Cup series but in other racing series there are - over the last couple decades there have been less than a half dozen. Bill Lester was the latest and currently races in the Rolex series. There is an increasing number of professional athletes moving from NFL/NBA to start NASCAR teams or work for race teams. Brad Daughtery and Terrell Owens are two who have started teams and are active in the sport. Lewis Hamilton from England has raced F1 for a number of years and has won the championship.

I personally know a few NASCAR fans who aren't assholes. I went to a NASCAR race with them a couple of years ago.

On that day, the non-asshole fans were definitely in the minority.
