It began late this afternoon with people taking over most of Klickitat Avenue Southwest near the intersection with Southwest Spokane Street. At first, police formed a line around the protesters, part of the West Coast Port Shutdown effort, and watched:

A lane of traffic was still open for trucks and cars trying to cross the Klickitat Avenue Bridge.

But then that lane began to close as protesters grabbed pallets, corrugated metal siding, and other materials from a nearby junk yard and used them to extend their roadblock.

Eventually, it went all the way across the road, halting traffic entirely.

That's when the stun grenades—and the flying police flares, and the pepper spray, and the hurled pieces of barricade, and the forceful arrests—began.

I saw at least six people in handcuffs. The Seattle Police Department says 11 people were arrested, and claims the trouble started when protesters "began throwing flares (which burn at 1,400 degrees fahrenheit), bags of bricks and paint, rebar and other debris at the police officers and police horses monitoring the demonstration. At least one officer was injured after being struck in the face with a bag of paint. The officer was treated at the scene by SFD medics and did not require transportation."
