Clint Eastwood: "I Don't Give a Fuck Who Wants to Get Married to Anybody Else!"

Posted by on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 1:53 PM

In light of everyone suddenly caring about Clint Eastwood and his political views, The New Yorker digs up the actor's views on gay marriage, courtesy of GQ:

These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of.... They go on and on with all this bullshit about “sanctity”—don’t give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.

Much more sensible than anything that ever came from the party that likes to brand itself as being about common sense.

Clint has always been a badass.

PS: Slog fails to absorb my comments on the first or even second try almost all the time now. The page fails to load, and I have to use Alt-Backarrow and F5 to reload my comment because there are no controls on the commenting window, and submit again. And again. Almost every time. Very annoying.

Same Depression era generation as my old man. And from the same "Americana" conservative background. They have the old school "stop being a candy-ass" reflex occasionally, but basically they don't give a shit about these kinds of so-called values issues.

This generation of old dudes always surprises me. The other day my dad stunned me with this (paraphrase): "..the morons voting for Gingrich are people that think ass-fucking was invented in Haight Ashbury in 1969. Let me tell you even Teddy Roosevelt ass-fucked. Hell. Eleanor Roosevelt, too. Probably. Who cares."

...and then he said, "Chief, I was just wondering: I suppose that mangy red-bone hound's got no place else to go either. He might as well ride along with us; Hell, everybody else is. "

Clint's always been a "mind yer own business" type. He ran for mayor of Carmel (CA) in part because there was a law there prohibiting the eating of ice cream cones while walking down the sidewalk-- drips, y'know. He won.

The conservatives hated him for "Million Dollar Baby" and its pro-euthanasia theme. Not only that, but as a director he's worked with Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Laura Linney, and Marcia Gay Harden who are all in the right wing's Commie Hall of (In)Fame.

Just as a matter of... something, I don't know what: I didn't think "Million Dollar Baby" carried a pro-euthanasia message. It was presented as a choice that the character made. There was a compelling anti-euthanasia message delivered by a priest, of all people. At the end of the movie I don't think you could say the character felt great about his choice, even if it was his ultimate conviction. MDB was far more ambivalent -- well, ambiguous -- about the subject than wingnuts like Michael Medved gave it credit for. Even badasses can't answer every question. The point was that the character made a decision, and after the movie was done he'd have to figure out how to live with it, if he could.

And stuff.

Clint's comments reflect how the majority of Americans feel, despite the noisy right-wing minority.
