Sneaker Drop

Posted by on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 11:20 AM

These dedicated sneakerheads are camping outside Rock Paper Scissors on Pike Street. They are waiting for tomorrow's drop of the new Nike Foamposite Galaxy. They've been out here off and on all week, set up with chairs, a heater, and good friends.

The sneakers do look pretty cool: outer-space graphics, material that simulates astronaut training suits, and glow-in-the-dark soles. They retail for $220 but sell for thousands of dollars online. I hope these charming guys get what they came for—they just want to look their best.

If they really do go for thousands online, they might be waiting in line for reasons that have nothing to do with fashion.

Hey cool, maybe "kids getting murdered for their sneakers" can one again become a talking point about the depravity of contemporary culture.

Look at what the 99% has to endure!!

Sacrificing their lives for high end sneakers.

Where is Occupy Seattle?!

Who among us is not outraged!

Is this on national news...?! Should be - it would be an excellent piece to present in attempts to try and hide that anything impactful or worthwhile is going on in the world right now!

I own an older model of nike foamposite shoes, and they are AWESOME, the best hoops shoe I have ever owned. I wouldn't wait in line for days though. Although I did wait in line a few years back for the first reissue of Air Jordan IV...

Does anyone know when we're scheduled to go back to having grown-ups use words like "arrive," "debut," "introduce," or "launch," instead of trying sooooo hard to be down with the kids and making us all cringe with the word "drop?"

My first thought was that Nike paid people to go and line up, to make the sneakers look more in demand than they are.

And as for these things going for thousands online? That can be manufactured as well. (Nike employee No. 1 puts the sneakers online. Nike No. 2 bids thousands of dollars for said sneaker online).

Remember stencils? It used to be normal citizens putting stencils on public walls, and then Nike started spaying its logo on walls. They are civic infiltrators, and their shoes are cheap looking and completely unflattering.

If you look at the completed listings on Ebay, there are a few pairs that have sold for up to $1500, but only a few, and they were not bid up to that amount, but started there. There are many more pairs on offer that are not attracting bids. I think @12 might be right.

i suggest calling the cops on these a-hos for loitering, and if the popo does not arrest, file complaints with the city for preferential treatment of privileged rich people!

How these shoes appeal to anyone over the age of 7 is beyond me, but then I've never liked basketball, or much of anything Nike sells.
