Jake Gyllenhaal Goes On a Hipster-Killing Spree?

Posted by on Tue, Mar 13, 2012 at 12:56 PM

This is a music video, released yesterday, by a band called the Shoes, for a song called "Time To Dance." It stars Jake Gyllenhaal (???) as a murderous social outcast. I know it's the "cool thing" to be anti-hipster, but after watching the first 3 minutes of this 8-minute video, all I could think of is Kyle Huff and his terrible place in Seattle's history.

Bad move, Shoes and Gyllenhaal?

Also, in light of the recent spate of killings of "gays" in Iraq, by which the killers mean not just homosexuals but "emos", or anyone with a, dare I say it, hipster haircut.

I didn't know it was cool to be anti hipster nowadays? I must be out of touch.

Who hasn't wanted to kill a hipster?

Minus 10,000 points for using the name the Shoes.

And minus a couple other points for everything else.

The video's well done, but I'm not sure what it has to do with the song. Killing goes on all the time in all shapes and sizes regardless. It shouldn't really censor what kind of art you make.

@Cato

Hating hipsters was cool a couple of years ago, but it's pretty mainstream now.

Even hipsters hate hipsters these days.

I don't think most music videos are made with tragic Seattle incidents in mind. Should they be? Kyle Huff was nuts, so you can't make a weird art piece about somebody being nuts and killing hipsters now? Pearl Jam shouldn't have made the Jeremy video, by the same logic. Hey, there have been school shootings! It's neither a good nor a bad move. It's an interesting decision to make the video, but it should be judged on its own merits, not compared with some local tragedy.

Ghastly and brilliant, I think. Using the overlay of the transportive mustic itself, it employs the same angle Eli closed with - is this guy unwilling to connect, or unable? Did this guy start out judgmental or is that the corner his alienation backed him into? These questions have driven psycho-killer stories for ages, both journalistic and fictional. Good catch, Kelly O.

Nobody even knows what a "hipster" is anymore, except it's someone we hate that will never self-identify as a hipster, who also claims to hate hipsters, but doesn't really know what they are either...

I tried to watch this yesterday and couldn't. There is plenty of real violence to go around, watch the news. Setting a dance song to images of serial murder is the worst sort of sensationalism for publicity's sake.

I'm failing to see the hipsters. None of these people could be in "worn out".

I don't think anyone should mention that evil person's name, ever.

@5, I remember them. Great power pop. Still active too, which makes this new band even more annoying. I hope they sue 'em.

Remember a few years ago, when "emos" were being attacked in Mexico City? Dressed like hipsters, got called "faggot". Seems like kind of a bad idea to make fun out of killing them.

Blargh. I'm generally a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan, but this video is unwatchable. To me, anyway. I'm not entirely sure what message the band and/or Gyllenhaal is trying to convey, but I just found it pointless and depressing. No thanks.

Are those "hipsters"? Are we just calling people between the ages of 19-23 "hipsters" now?

I thought the video was interesting. Like a mini David Lynch movie.

Nice song! I like the video.

Props for using a foil.

Not bad. As far as death-porn, American Psycho was twice as sick and people seemed to enjoy it.

Yeah, the movie is too long and it seems like someone watched too much American Psycho.

To dull-minded people, "hipster" is like "politically correct" : a term they use as an insult because they lack the vocabulary to describe their feelings of envy and inadequacy.

It has been my experience that people who use those words as insults are middle-aged or older, and they are usually frustrated with their poor life choices, but unable or unwilling to take responsibility for their lot in life. So they lash out at young people who are being somewhat frivolous (hipsters), or those around them who are asking that we all behave with a modicum of civility (those who are "politically correct")

It's usually men (of all races, but white guys get the air time) who are the worst offenders, but the women-who-hate-other-women are a big contingent as well.

In any event, show me a person who did not go through a hipster phase, and I'll show you a real asshole.

@23 - I am definitely not a woman who hates other women.

That is all.

Being "anti-hipster" has nothing to do with being cool. It's simply a reaction among those of us who happen to live near them or frequently come into contact with them. It's not the way they look, but the way they act that makes a person want to smack them. They're one side of the "douchebag" coin. On the "heads" side is the "spraytan, mirror muscles and hair gel" douche (Alpha Douche) you'll see at the local night club. One the "tails" side of that coin is the hipster douche (the Beta) you will see at a local music gig.

The "alpha douche" goes overboard with machismo to cover up the fact that deep down inside he's a complete herb. The hipster "beta douche" goes overboard with the artsy pretensions and desperate attempts to appear cool -- all to cover up the fact he's not even close to being those things he pretends to be. Hipsters rank even lower than juggalos (I never thought such a thing was possible) as far as I'm concerned.

Well, of course, Kelly dear. I didn't mean you. There, there....

But as anyone who has ever worked in a hellish office job can tell you, there's no shortage of the women-who-hate-other-women. It usually manifests itself in spats about the thermostat and anonymous notes about excessive perfume left in the breakroom.
