Poynter has some unanswered questions for This American Life: Among them, this good one. It sounds easy enough to answer but probably—because so many of the show's best narratives inhabit interesting gray areas—would not be so easy to answer:
Are listeners to understand that all of the stories on This American Life should be viewed as literal truth-telling, up to the standards of journalism?
Bill Maher has a demand: Stop apologizing.
Linda Greenhouse has one word for the legal case against health care reform: Weak. (And then a lot more words around that one.)
Unemployment in Washington State is down: Hooray!

The latest on Trayvon Martin: "They are joining the Trayvon Martin crusade by the hour now," writes the Washington Post. "It feels like an echo from another era—when there was racial injustice in the headlines, when federal troops were dispatched to comb Southern swamps to look for blacks who had vanished. And when lawyers for the NAACP slid into town with briefcases and addresses of safe houses."

Not sure if this is an Internet Explorer issue (I am at work), but NOM's anti-starbucks website is essentially broken...you can't even navigate it properly. Nice work guys!

So much to comment on this a.m., but L.A. banning words is absurd and unlikely to withstand legal challenge. Don't these jackasses have anything better to do?

Dudes! You forgot the best (and most meaningful) news from yesterday:
The Hew Hampshire State House voted down a bill to repeal that state's marriage equality law. It was expected to be a close vote in the 75% Republican chamber. It was expected that the state's Democratic governor would have to veto it with the hope that the veto wouldn't be overturned, which was questionable.
Instead, the bill loss overwhelmingly, 202 - 133.
This is huge. It's the first time Republicans have decided to leave marriage equality in place. Now, of course, most state's Republicans are not the brand of libertarians that make up the NH GOP, but it is still a very big deal.
Hopefully the bill is dead forever but who knows? We do know that we have a list of house members that need to be removed from office this November.

The Bill Maher sentiment needs to follow the VP joke. Instead of shutting him up, Biden needs a reality TV crew following him around. I think it would really help lighten the mood around here.

George Takei got 41,800 likes on a Facebook post in 2 hours. Dump Starbucks has 2,350 pledges in what, two days? I wish these assholes would find something more productive to do with their money, like seed small business or pay off someone's crushing student debt.

I hate Starbucks. However, this "A portion of every cup of coffee purchased at a Starbucks anywhere in the world goes to fund this corporate assault on marriage" makes me want to go buy some Starbucks. My poor-ass self be damned about the cost and my coffee loving self be damned about the taste.

@4 Vince, the FCC already issues fines when certain words are broadcast over the airwaves; it is well established. The LA legislation, simply "condemns" racist and sexist language, so I don't see the harm against which someone could challenge the resolution.
@2 I believe that is exactly the clarification Biden was making. These people were socially well lubricated, meaning liquored up, not otherwise lubricated. I believe leaving the latter implication intact, would have been reported as a gaffe.

I believe This American Life has typically been clear when something is fictional or at least non-journalistic in nature as they do occasionally run those types of pieces. I vaguely recall a David Sedaris fable or two and a piece about a weightlifting snowman. It may also depend on the storyteller too. I don't generally believe that all of the Shalom Auslander pieces are without creative license or rigidly fact checked, for example.

First, George Zimmerman's family making a public announcement that the psychopath, who was on a hunt to kill a Black-American that night, is Hispanic, can go back to where they originally came from.
Period! I don't want to hear this chronic and constant BS, that only some people are either criminal, or rascist or half-witted, etc.
We've experienced our fill of corrupt politicians of color in Seattle, and elsewhere, so let's can all the creepy talk from scumbags like the Zimmermans, and those who believe that a different racial turn on something absolves all and everything!
In other words, true diversity in America today is anyone who isn't crooked, anyone who is honest, e.g., an honest politician, an honest attorney, an honest government regulator, an honest cop, an honest banker (never mind on that last one, that is simply too farfetched!).

I've only heard one and I repeat only one segment of that show, where Planet Money was concerned, where they actually reported the truth ---- for a colossal change! (The segment where they correctly broke down the population who was responsible for the subprime market borrowing: the top bunch were made up of corporate real estate speculators and wealthy individual real estate speculators, corporate house flippers and wealthy individual house flippers, those upper-middle class and semi-wealthy types who purchased second and third homes then quickly walked away when they went underwater, and the very bottom one-sixth of that group were the actual families and individuals who purchased houses for residences to exist in.)
