Slog Bible Study: Numbers 15:32-36

Posted by on Sun, Apr 1, 2012 at 7:00 AM

Numbers 15:32-36
While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp." So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Wait a tick, shouldn't they have waited till the next day to stone him? Cuz stoning a dude sure sounds like work to me.

This is one of those things where people simply don't understand how revolutionary some of the things that Jesus did were at the time, like healing people on the Sabbath, and why his story about the shepherd who looked for sheep on the Sabbath or the woman who looked for the coin on the Sabbath were so shocking to the people at the time - not necessarily that it was shocking that people would do such things, but that someone claiming to be a moral leader would say that it was okay rather than at least giving lip service to the traditional morality.

Today's right wing Christians who claim that Jesus would absolutely be on their side on all their moral crusades simply don't realize how shockingly liberal Jesus was by the standards of his time.

Pat Robertson saying that maybe pot should be decriminalized is NOTHING compared to things like working on the Sabbath, hanging out with hookers and lepers, and telling people to love Samaritans.

@8 .. But it was GOD who asked for the stoning. It wasn't lip service.

I barely cope with two days off a-week, so _I_ would kill one of my ancient cousins for the ability to refuse to work at least one day per.

The Romans excoriated us base Iudeans for our laziness in not labouring on the Sabbath; I think it was one of our definitely positive contributions to trend that I devoutly hope will end with noöne's having to work involuntarily, ever.

Beside, it didn't happen, it's just a way to emphasise a point...and any decent Halakhic court could find three ways not to execute someone.

Numbers Updated:

"While the Christians were in church, a man was seen digging in his garden on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gardening brought him to Pat Robertson and Rick Santorum and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Pat Robertson, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the church." So the assembly took him outside the church and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Pat Robertson."

There, fixed.

Killing people isn't against any commandments. This is what people get for reading translations. It's much more accurate to say Thou Shalt Not Murder. There are numerous forms of killing that are allowed, but randomly killing people is not. Or killing people just because you want to is also not okay. You're only allowed to kill for the Bible-approved reasons.

All of you Christian haters can go on & on bashing The Bible, because you can't interpret it properly. Clearly, the loving Biblical message is lost on you people!

The true meaning of this passage is seen in the 'gathering wood' phrase, which signifies that the man had a growing hard-on. What isn't stated in this translation is that Moses said unto him "Man! You have a nice gathering cock ...mind if I touch it?" When the man declined Moses' advances, Moses had him killed. Here endeth the lesson.

Another trick fuck? its like if your stupid enough to ask that question then right after the stoning God would have to clear up that issue of why these Idiotlites were out looking around on the Sabbath? So you were out "looking" Patrolling? rounding up violators for me to tell you how to deal with them?
