Solid Dating Advice For Anyone Who Thinks Our Flag Should Have a Fetus On It

Posted by on Fri, Apr 6, 2012 at 1:29 PM

First, though—why the fuck are people allowing Phyllis Schlafly in front of crowds? I mean, she'd be the first to tell you that she—a woman!—is not qualified to speak in the presence of so many men:

Conservative political activist Phyllis Schlafly on Thursday had some advice for the students at The Citadel college in South Carolina: stay away from feminists.

While giving a lecture entitled “Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America,” the 87-year-old Schlafly told the all-male audience that “feminist is a bad word and everything they stand for is bad,” according to The Post and Courier. Schlafly also warned against getting into a relationship with a feminist.

“Find out if your girlfriend is a feminist before you get too far into it,” she said. “Some of them are pretty. They don’t all look like Bella Abzug.”

Schlafly is most well known for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have affirmed the equal treatment of men and women. Thanks in part to the work of her organization, The Eagle Forum, the proposed amendment was never ratified by the states.

What a hilariously horrid woman. If only I had the money to open the Phyllis Schlafly Center for Lesbian Softball Training and Abortion Decoupage, I would. In her honor.

Bloated old gasbag WASP men spouting misogynist crap makes me angry. Weird stockholm-y conservative women spouting misogynist crap makes me sad and confused.

And for feminists: “Find out if your boyfriend is a woman-hater before you get too far into it,” I said. “Some of them are pretty. They don’t all look like Kelsey Grammer.”

Same thing as the gay-hating closeted gays. She's only this crazy because she doesn't want anyone to find out she's a woman.

She's the only person I've ever gone to a protest over. College Republicans at my hugely liberal, gay-friendly, women's liberal arts college thought it'd make them edgy to bring her in to speak. She was fucking vile. I looked into her eyes and saw evil and I'm not speaking hyperbolically.

More like SyPhyllis Schlafly, amirite?

@2 Stockholm syndrome is way too kind. She's a sociopath ahead of the curve.

Cienna, if you start a Kickstarter for the Phyllis Schlafly Center for Lesbian Softball Training and Abortion Decoupage, I will give you all my money.

If there is one thing that resonates with the youth it is Bella Abzug humor. I mean I respect that lady, but she did leave congress 35 years ago, and died 14 years ago.

@9 - "Bella Abzug" was a terrific name for a terrific lady - "Abzug" just has a ring to it, don't you think? Phyllis the Fly had to reach decades back for that one because we call them "humanists" now, who just happen to be female.

I've missed out on seeing the term "Abortion Decoupage" - what a mental image there, great name for a death metal band.

I had to look up "decoupage", and now I am wiping away tears from laughing.

Count me in for that Kickstarter, as well.

Cienna, I have $100 ready to invest in that concept. Heck, I'll put in for either half of that concept alone.

@7 Yes, you are right, but that's still not as funny as P.S.C.L.S.T.A.D.

I'll cough up $42. What is this money going to do, again?

@5, thank you for that.

@8, etc, I hate kickstarter but it would be almost worth it to raise money for a dozen or so pink satin warmup jackets embroidered with, "The Phyllis Schlafly Center for Lesbian Softball Training and Abortion Decoupage."

Maybe we could work in a rival team of warmup jackets like, "The Bella Abzug Foundation for Feminist Fisting."

Damn, I'm going to be fantasizing about this all afternoon now.

Wait - I just caught this: “Feminists […] they essentially are unlikable,” I am unlikeable?!? All those people I've known in my life. They didn't like me? On any level? Does anyone like me?!? I like MY feminist friends. OH NO!! Maybe they're not really feminists!?!? Or maybe I’m not a feminist?

It can’t be true that I’m unlikeable. You all like me… don’t you?

I’m going off to cry now.

Supreme Ruler Of The Universe 19

Much as I dislike the labels, I believe she has a point and it has impacted me in my personal relationships.

There are a lot of people how have been "instilled" (one could go further and say "imprinted") with certain agenda ideas that are not readily apparent on the surface and which will come back to bite you in unexpected and very harsh ways.

as usual, an old conservative doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.i consider myself a feminist, and i'm a straight man. i don't think i've ever been in a relationship with a woman who WASN'T a feminist.

You buried the lead.

She gave this speech at The Citadel.

For those not in the know, it's a private military academy that makes West Point and it's Hell week look like 4:20 at Berkeley in 1968.

In short, it's a fucking awful place. You might remember that it was also where Mitt Romney gave his first major foreign policy speech of the campaign. Which is notable since it was Romney looking presidential in front of an audience of cadets... essentially, he rented the cadets because the image gave him gravitas. Or something.

Look, officers in the US military already come from deeply warped political backgrounds, I can only imagine what lunacy future officers are ingesting from a place that overtly slants things to the political right.
One thing is for sure, we're going to lose a lot of wars with too many of these clowns.

Wait. "all-MALE audience"? Aren't there roughly 200 FEMALE cadets enrolled in the Citadel? Where were THEY whilst Mrs. Schlafly was giving her "lecture"? Stockade or KP?

#31 Yes but not without a fight
Women and The Citadel
Although women have taken evening classes in The Citadel's graduate school since 1966, none had been admitted to the Corps of Cadets. That changed in 1994 when Shannon Faulkner applied and was accepted for admission. She had left her gender information off the application. When it was discovered that she was a woman, The Citadel revoked her offer, so Faulkner filed suit against The Citadel to gain admission.

In her court case, Faulkner's lawyers argued that she was entitled to admission under the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
