City Deluxe Junk Evicted?!

Slog tipper Chris reports that Deluxe Junk, one of the last old-school businesses left in Fremont, got its 60-day eviction notice today. This really bums me out, I have found some great treasures in its warrens and back rooms. I also have long appreciated its funky aesthetic and attitude, and what it adds to the great feeling of Fremont. Does anyone know the full story?

Good lord, I think I probably went in there the first time 34 years ago. I've bought many things there, most ridiculously a bar shaped like a boat, around which I designed our entire den to resemble a tiki bar complete with grass ceiling. After a couple of years of that, Mrs. Fnarf gently cleared her throat, and that was the end....

deluxe junk is a part of every seattlites heart, soul, living room, bathroom, kitchens, and home in general. this agression will not stand. there may have at one point been vacant store fronts but for the last 34 years deluxe junk's store front has been absolutely occupied by the most wonderful good hearted people. it's a tragedy that where some see love and community others see dollar signs. shame on you doric lodge 92.

@22: With the way Fremont's been going it's certainly not going to be a *Subway*. The Deluxe Junk space is sort of weird--a basement with no windows. My guess would be a bar or expensive women's clothing boutique.

and i will probably get in trouble for naming names, but oh well......this whole thing was started by new members (doric lodge #92) charles from wright brother bicycle shop in fremont AND his oppertunistic (did i spell that right?) friend hotta (some german guy who's name i probably did spell wrong) they have been pushing people around using the lodge as back up. it is fun for them. i believe rotten people should always be exposed.

I grew up in Fremont, to preface this.
The guy who runs wright bros is a fucking penis who thinks he runs the best bike shop in the world. But, one of the guys who runs deluxe junk is also a dick. I remember hearing they owned that building, but I guess not.
There were always little cockfights between the Fremont business owners, the arts council, Suzy Burke(and her kids!) and everyone else. This will probably blow over, it's not news. Itll blow my mind if they actually get kicked out.
The fact that Fremont is going to shit, and becoming a faceless bland wall is true though.

This is my letter to the Doric Lodge, I recieved an answer that my information is inaccurate. I wrote back asking what their plans for the community are and they have not answered. I do not believe that people who are older in years and experience and have served as mentors for there community should be kicked out to make way for - what? Please answer my question.

I have watched as buildings go down to become sterile, money making pieces of crap and I am tired it. Seattle has an amazing history and it gets knocked away by contractors to make a buck. How is this making you "better men"? I understand the need to make money, to support your families. But this sort of enterprise strikes me as short sighted. If you take everything away that makes Freemont a cultural, lively, caring community you will attract only short term goals that profit the few and hurt the majority and the children you leave behind.. If this is your goal it is accomplished.

Charles is not playing with a full deck, He never has and will destroy everything that people love and find interesting about Fremont. He sucks and has malice in his heart. As for the guys at deluxe, yes they can be a little testy, but they really are good people and this is terrible thing that is happening to them for no reason. I can't believe the bullshit Doric 92 has up on there site. I've watched this unfolding from when they took Kim away. They set her alarm off by breaking into her store w/o notice in the middle of the night to show her place to a new tennents. When she tried to deduct the $150 fine from her rent they said nope, sucks to be you small business owner. Charles is a douche bag. I ban any of the weeds that may sprout in what is still the beautiful garden we know as Deluxe.

Deluxe Junk is a landmark in Fremont, in Seattle and in the vintage community that *used* to be thriving here. In an age of increasing commercialism and greed, they run a business based on love for what they sell. Their prices are hands down the best and lowest in the entire city for vintage furniture, clothing and a million and one things you need the minute you set your eyes upon them. Why? Because they are doing what they love, not just out to make a buck. So it is even more insulting that they are being forced out by greedy power-hungry Masons masquerading as decent human beings. The masons have shown time and again over the last year or so that they do not value the community, their tenants or even their own stated purpose and vision. The level of cruelty that has gone into their efforts to force out all of their tenants is horrifying - it is not fair business practices it is nasty, disrespectful and shameful behavior. Shame on you, Masons, for so blatantly defying your own Masonic Values and Ethnics: "We invest in children, our neighborhoods, and our future" - LIES. The founding fathers of Masonry and the builders of the Fremont community are dishonored by what the Doric Lodge 92 Masons have become.

Deluxe Junk was always my favorite vintage shop in Seattle and is one of the places I always visit when I return. The idea that they're having this kind of fight with the Doric people about staying where they've been for 34 years -- part of a community which their business helped to develop -- speaks to me about why my friends abandoned Fremont years ago for better digs. It's a wonderful part of Seattle that seems to be imploding under its own greed, just like everything else good that has come and gone from that place. It's needless to pine for the good ol' days, but it's insufferable to watch over-privileged, self-important power hungry assholes eat at the core of the community like termites on wood.

The following was sent to me by a member of the Doric Lodge, My response is below it.
The Doric Building Association is attempting, in good faith and as a generous landlord, to renegotiate its lease with a longtime tenant, Deluxe Junk. No steps have been taken to evict Deluxe Junk out of Doric’s building. It is Doric’s sincerest intent and desire to come to some mutually agreeable lease terms with David Marzullo, owner of Deluxe Junk. However, Mr. Marzullo needs to first pay for back rent he owes Doric, stop spreading false rumors about Doric and come to the table and negotiate, in good faith, the payment of his back rent and terms of a new lease agreement.

None of this addresses my questions or concerns on the impact of this to the community of Seattle and Freemont. None of this acknowledges the history behind Deluxe Junk the contribution they have made.
1. What contributions have the Doric Lodge provided for the Freemont community?
2. Being a NON - PROFIT I would think you would want to share and be transparent in your dealings and your vision for the future. Please share with me WHAT that is.
3. You can not replace what the owners are as people or make anything as thought full or profitable as what they have created.
4. Given the complete disregard for the above I seriously doubt that any real legal legitimate lease has been offered. All the actions I have seen point to bullying tactics on the part of the members of the Doric Temple.
5. I am also concerned that the owners are being singled out as vulnerable prey because of there age and gender preference.

i walked by doric lodge #92 and they have taped a statement with names and colored un'truths for the neighborhood to read. they don't realize thats where everyone has a smoke from the beloved dubliner bar. the neighborhood is mad about this, and we all get a little bit braver when fighting for justice.(especially after having two beers in a row) i appreciate people speaking their mind, even if it gets crunchy; at least it's real.

@ Beaker, I see you are a moron. Let me break it down for you so that maybe next time you'll think before your mouth gets all full of the taste of diaria. Deluxe moved into that location after their first year of business when Fremont had no value. Back then it was considered a slum. The temple, under great management, invited them to move into there vacant space. Nobody was beating down the doors back then. Now, with new management and no respect for history, they first took the two tennents that Deluxe subletted to and are now pushing them out. They are nice people and they are proud people, they have been pushed at from assholes their whole lives and turned the other cheek whenever possible. I suspect that they are fed up, scared for their livelihood and a bit sick over this slap in the face. I don't like explaining things to fuck heads but I'm making an exception here. Good luck getting the taste of shit out of your mouth.

Sorry to hear about this. Deluxe Junk was one of the first places I visited looking for used items when I moved here 18 years ago. That's when I discovered how funky Fremont WAS. Sad to see it leave.

It seems obvious that the people who are commenting on this forum have no idea what is going on or the history of what Doric Lodge has done and continues to do for our community. When was the last time Deluxe Junk opened up their business to feed the homeless? When was the last time Deluxe Junk donated funds to B.F. Day elementary school or to help out some of the less fortunate families that send their kids there? As I have children at B.F. Day I can vouch for what they have done for our school and community.
I don't know what is going on with the lease, but before your hang them out to dry maybe you should do some research. They (masons) have been an active part of the Fremont community for over a hundred years.

When was the last time Deluxe Junk opened up their business to feed the homeless? When was the last time Deluxe Junk donated funds to B.F. Day elementary school or to help out some of the less fortunate families that send their kids there? As I have children at B.F. Day I can vouch for what they have done for our school and community.
I don't know what is going on with the lease, but before your hang them out to dry maybe you should do some research. They (masons) have been an active part of the Fremont community for over a hundred years.

this is sad...when i first moved to seattle in 1988 (to fremont), i loved coming to deluxe junk to get some great furniture, fixtures, clothes, records - you name it. this is a shame!
back to 1988, my landlord was moving from fremont after living there for over a decade as she told me she did not like the way it was changing. a year or so after that, the guys who ran mikes old clothes were leaving too telling me "fremont sucks now". so, how long has fremont sucked? a long time it appears.
with ballard being the new bellevue, this again really is awful how things are going with retail in this city.

the mason's should have asked for fair rent like a normal landlord.....their current management is not normal....... this all could have been avoided; we would still have deluxe junk if management had acted in a gentlemanly business like manner.

The Mason's response (@40) sounds pretty reasonable, doesn't it? They want to charge something a little bit closer to market rates than what they had been asking for? They want to collect rents directly instead of letting a tenant sublet units in the building they own?
