Bodybuilders: HOT or NOT?

Posted by on Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Is the rock hard muscle of a bodybuilder sexy? Or, are you like me, and the spray tan gets too distracting and your mind keeps wandering back, over and over, to the delicious image of a freshly cooked Thanksgiving turkey?

Read Abigail Guay's article about the 2012 Emerald Cup Bodybuilding Finals.

More photos after the jump, and here in this handy-dandy Stranger slideshow.

I guess I'm just hoping that bodybuilders date each other...? I try not to judge body types/builds, I mean to each their own, right? I have a pretty good self-image so I don't really need to diss anyone to make myself feel better....

BUT: with body builders I guess I just feel like we wouldn't have enough in common; I prefer utile muscle mass as opposed to 'gym' muscle mass, and just the thought of how regimented their diets must be seems problematic to my own food preferences.

eeeeew. Definitely not.
Like any good thing in moderation, taken to the extreme it is freakishly unattractive.
A fit person is hotter than an unfit person, but this is just gross.

If nothing else, I admire the dedication/discipline it requires. And a part of me is immediately turned on by any man that squeeze my head from my body like a grape.

The only permanent side effect from anabolic steroids use is the enlargement of the female clitiris. Their job gives them a dick and they make most of their money via prostitution. Sexy is one word that you could use to describe them. It's not the one I would go with, though.

Cory Everson was the best.

The rock hard muscle, not really that gross as it doesn't last. They'll do push ups before going on state, to maximize the muscles, (for the judges), but wait an hour and they look normal.

It's an interesting world. My brother did amateur bodybuilding for some time, even took second place in a state competition.

They're really not very healthy. The routines and drugs and diet aren't natural and take a huge toll on the body. It's all about symmetry and "perfect" shapes too, not the most muscle, but the "perfect" proportions, which is a lot harder to do than just getting super strong.

Also, the veins (vascularity) show up by refraining from consuming dairy products. It apparently makes the skin thinner.

Also also, they usually paint the tan on, not spray. Painting gives them more control. Bodybuilding is all about control. Unnatural control, but nevertheless...

Right, and when Lindy West wrote her "Hello, I am Fat" article, how would everyone react to people writing:

"eeeeew. Definitely not.
Like any good thing in moderation, taken to the extreme it is freakishly unattractive. "

I like the way Dan puts it: Fat people are attractive.... to people who are attracted to fat people. Same w/ body builders. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I don't think in either case anybody should be called gross and unattractive, even if you privately think so.

@11, it is different because bodybuilders go onstage, at well attended events, and use their bodies to compete for prizes

COMTE 13
Well, one thing to keep in mind is that most professional body builders bulk and tone-up to a much higher degree just before competitions, so it's not like they're walking around looking this muscularly exaggerated all the time.

I am astonished that a woman who once (or more?) dressed as Hulk Hogan would express this opinion. It made me laugh, though.

"Who wants to ride on an ironing board? That ain't no fun. I tried me one. Grow that meat all over your bones. Work the wall with the local jones. And while you do it, remember this line. The sniffer says it all the time. 'The bigger the cushion, the better the pushing.'"

Power lifters are far more interesting to me, because they train to be strong and not to attain some (freakish) physical ideal.

I admire the work and the dedication, to tease out every last possible striation of muscle for display, but it's not hot.

I've always been icked out by the bodybuilders... but Kelly O - you've seen this video, right?

I read this not wanting to be judgy, as an athletic person myself. But then I saw the slideshow and well … yikes!

It would be cooler to see what people could do without roids and a Space Needle orange paint job.

Everyone looks like they're having a ton of fun--I wish I could've been there. It does make me cringe a little to see women's (fake) breasts slapped on all those slabs of muscle, though. It looks painful.

Reverse Polarity 28
I'm with Riz @10.

I get that that lots of people think a tan looks good. But they don't look tan; they look orange. Like an Oompa Loompa. It's bizarre!

The competition spray-tan, frequently fried hair, the exaggerated posing (veins!) and the dehydrated look (more definition!) are big turn-offs, but a muscular woman in normal attire (or normal lack of attire) and pose is great.

When I see a guy in a mankini, my eyes naturally head straight to their willies. I can't tell if they tuck or if their bodies are so freakishly outsized it looks like a button in comparison, but the package is almost always disappointing.

Beyond that, meh. Not my thing. I might be less turned off if they didn't shave everything. Also: LOL UR ORANGE.

I respect lifting as a hobby like any other, and maaaaaybe bodybuilding, although I can't see much of a difference between that and (ick) pageants. It's not a look I find attractive. If you look that way naturally then, fine, you can't help it and I won't judge you, but to go out of your way for that look is just boring, sorry.

@ 18, Fnarf,

Now I know what you look like outside of the tub and the gold suit. I almost commented. Just my $0.02, but I think you should cut back your lifting to drams of whisky. Cheers!

Functional muscle is super hot. Athletes get me going every time.

Bodybuilders? I mean, they're doing a thing, and that is okay, but the look really turns me off. I ain't gonna get all judgmental and say it's gross or a waste of time or shallow or any of that shit. It's fine. I just don't like how it looks.

Hot, but not in contests--too staged, too contrived, and none too healthy. (You don't get to look like that through anywhere near normal water intake.)

That said, I'm a total sucker for muscle chicks. I mean come on, those legs!

you're all total phaggots if you think bodybuilders are disgusting.
Sure... on stage it looks disgusting... but getting to such low bf% is not possible for day to day living.

People need to get slapped back onto their feet, because society is moving backwards. Its NOT ok to be obese.

Looks like its only meatloaf wales writing these articles hating on something they cannot acheive.
