Gun-Crazy Country: Republican National Convention to Ban Water Guns, not Handguns

Posted by on Thu, May 3, 2012 at 8:26 AM

This report speaks all for itself...

In the politically-charged and likely protest-filled streets of Tampa, Fla., during the Republican National Convention in August, water guns will be strictly prohibited. Concealed handguns, on the other hand, will be perfectly legal.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said this week that banning handguns from downtown Tampa during the convention, as the city’s Mayor Bob Buckhorn requested, “would surely violate the Second Amendment.”

No need to point out the madness of this kind of logic...

While no handguns will be allowed inside the convention, which is being protected by the Secret Service, concealed carry license-holders will be able to carry their weapons in the streets surrounding the convention.
They will not, however, be able to have “super soaker” water guns, sticks, poles, portable shields or glass bottles.

Dan Paulus is this post's tipper.

Why aren't super soakers protected by the second ammendment?

so while a person can freely carry a small armory on their person to the convention, anyone with a protest sign will be
guilty of a class c felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison... sounds reasonable.

It's a Florida thing. They regularly ban water guns of any kind during Spring Break and other festivals in Daytona and Coco Beach.

If I remember my bizarre childhood correctly, the reason is because people in the past have filled them with miscellaneous fluids (like bleach, pee, and other equally dangerous/ disgusting fluids) and then hose down a crowd or mark a hot chick.

A good old-fashioned gun battle outside the convention between dueling brigades of kooks would be a wonderful thing to behold. Remember what the kooks in Chicago did for Nixon in '68.

Good Morning Charles,
I agree that it is ridiculous to carry lawfully concealed handguns anywhere in the radius (1 mile?) of any political party's convention venue. Evidently Charlotte where the Democrats will gather (State law in Florida and North Carolina allows concealed weapons, including guns) has a similar situation:

@3 is correct. It's a Florida thing. The RNC isn't banning water guns inside the venue. It's Florida law that is.

Water guns work _better_ than regular ones in some cases---if they're filled with holy water.

(Make your own '1%' joke---I'm bitter.)

@4 A gun battle inside the convention would be far more entertaining. That's why we should demand that banning guns inside is a violation of the rights of NRA members and those with legal handguns. Let them see what it's like for the family murdered in Arizona yesterday by legal guns.

@8: The Democrats and liberals would be to blame for that because Socialism.

@#3 & #5: I think #1 is right -- why aren't squirt guns covered by the Second Amendment? It doesn't specifically say what kind of arms you're allowed to bear. Squirt guns are constitutionally protected!

the second amendment doesn't say anything about guns. it says "arms". and since you can "arm" yourself with a stick, it just goes to show that gun people really aren't interested in the constitution, or in anyone protecting themselves, just in killing people.

What if I conceal my squirt gun?

Can they carry pistol-grip crossbows?
