Slog tipper Laurence said in an e-mail yesterday that this was right up my alley:

The aggregating Web site RottenTomatoes.com suspended user comments on movie reviews of "The Dark Knight Rises" after commenters reacted harshly to negative reviews of the film and made profane and threatening remarks about the critics who wrote them.

Matt Atchity, the site's editor-in-chief, said Tuesday it was the first time RottenTomatoes.com has suspended user comments, adding postings about "Dark Knight" reviews would likely be restored by the end of the week.

Christy Lemire, in particular, is getting attacked all around the internet for her negative review of the movie, with commenters rolling out the same old misogyny (superhero movie reviewin' is man's work, little lady!) and chastising her for not being intimately familiar with every Batman comic book. Most of these commenters, predictably, have not seen the movie yet, but they are defending the movie with everything they've got.

Sorry I didn't get this up yesterday, Laurence, but I was busy, um, watching The Dark Knight Rises. My review will be up soon. I expect many people who haven't seen the movie yet will have strong opinions about it. I encourage them to start pre-writing their hateful comments and death threats now.
