GOP: A Woman's Body Has Way to Prevent Pregnancy from a "Legitimate Rape"

Posted by on Sun, Aug 19, 2012 at 2:18 PM

This is so not a joke. The Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri, Todd Akin, actually, really said this. This is something he believes to be true. This is a man running for one of the highest political offices in the land. It boggles the mind...

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare... If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.

“Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Worst of all, some polls show Akin holding a significant lead over Sen. Claire McCaskill. Do women still live in that state?

For folks who would like to enquire -- politely, of course; why give them "hate" ammo? -- about his science behind "legitimate rape", Akin's numbers are 202-225-2561 and 314-590-0029.

when you're against abortion, you can't admit there's any scenario is which it is acceptable. and when you approach it from the idea that the fetus = fully formed human being, then no, a child produced by a rape, being innocent of that crime, does not deserve death. now you have to figure a way to legislate your beliefs without going straight at roe v wade. hence the 'death by a 1000 cuts' restrictions we're seeing in every GOP-controlled state, hence these gymnastics over "legitimate" rape.

Wasn't there recently a discussion on SLOG about how some of the poor whites in middle America vote against their economic self-interest? One side held the position that it was because they were under-educated.

The other side held that it was because they had different priorities.

I think that this statement by that politician from Missouri supports the "under-educated" claim.

Amazingly enough, that politician also voted against spending more money on education in Missouri.

A woman's right to an abortion is based on the right to Privacy. In essence, the Government or other persons cannot "enslave" her or coerce here into doing something against her will like carrying a pregnancy to term.

Yet, I posit -- what about doing harm to the baby. For example, would the mother drinking 100 martinis a day be something that a society should support? Or say, maliciously walking past an X-ray machine. Is that even legal...to knowingly try and harm a baby inside her?

Because my rapist used drugs, is that more on the legitimate side than say openly attacking and physically subduing a woman on the street? I guess I'm the stupid one, because to me, rape is rape. @20, etc. There is absolutely no defense to the candidate's statement. It's actually quite pathetic that you're trying. That statement of yours shows the incredible depth of your ignorance. You have the entire internet to educate you, yet you refuse to do so.

What I wonder is why the relatively intelligent conservatives have no shame in continuing to support their party. I'm a life-long liberal, and I certainly question my politics when I see so-called liberals act like idiots. I'm glad when the corrupt ones are prosecuted. Not so for the conservatives. No depravity is too low for them to continue to support their members. The idiotic statements coming from conservatives seem to happen on a weekly basis. I don't understand how any rational, intelligent person can continue to feel that the Republicans are of any value to anyone.

I remember when, in 1995, Congressman Henry Aldridge (guess what party), said to the House Appropriations Committee, "The facts show that people who are raped - who are truly raped - the juices don't flow, the body functions don't work and they don't get pregnant." Then, a little later, he got this one in too: "To get pregnant, it takes a little cooperation. And there ain't much cooperation in a rape."

At least, I remember the occasion, and the gag-inducing word used. I did not remember the name, what office he held, and the circumstances under which he said it. Finding that information easy though; I just had to type into Google the words pregnant, rape, and juices. (And now I'm going to delete my search history so I need never see those words together again.)

And I discovered one from 1988 too. Courtesy of the Daily News:

HARRISBURG — The odds that a woman who is raped will get pregnant are "one in millions and millions and millions," said state Rep. Stephen Freind, R-Delaware County, the Legislature's leading abortion foe.

The reason, Freind said, is that the traumatic experience of rape causes a woman to "secrete a certain secretion" that tends to kill sperm.

Two Philadelphia doctors specializing in human reproduction characterized Freind's contention as scientifically baseless.

Freind made the statement on a central Pennsylvania radio interview program earlier this month.

I don't understand how any rational, intelligent person can continue to feel that the Republicans are of any value to anyone.

The Republican or Democratic parties don't inherently offer anyone any value. It's the other way around. The people offer value to the party; either people are involved with their political parties or they are not. Given that, the rhetoric and actions of bad politicians don't negate actions of positive things good politicians and other contributors do for their respective parties.

I think that I remember that from a movie that they showed us in health class in high school. If I remember correctly the little cartoon sperm, after fighting his way through all the millions of weaker sperm finally approaches the egg. He doffs his hat and introduces himself. At that point the egg asks him if he is a legitimate sperm, coming from a loving and legally married man, or a criminal rapist sperm. She tells him that if he is rapist sperm he may as well just turn around and leave, because she just isn't that kind of girl.

But then, maybe I remembered the movie wrong. It's been a long time and I didn't really figure that the whole baby making business was something I needed to know anyway, being that I'm queer and all.

@4, @12: Damning everyone in "flyover country" throws away the lives of millions of women in a large part of the country, and gives a huge advantage to the conservatives in elections. The condescension you exhibit is a big part of why Democrats have lost the rural vote, and the Senate, to the Republicans.
The far right has figured out that they can use evangelical churches to mobilize large numbers of voters in primary elections, and have taken over the Republican Party, knowing full well that when people get frustrated with the economy and "throw the bums out" in the general election, that those far-righters get control of government in our two-party oligarchy. Paul Ryan is counting on that.
The Dems could easily take states like Missouri (which has a greater metropolitan population than does Washington State, after all), if they actually talked to people about issues of interest to rural areas like FDR did, e.g. "rural internetrification," or power lines to allow more wind generators to lease land on farms; as well as mobilizing voters in St. Louis and Kansas City.
And yeah....Akin is a tool. I'm curious as to how the female immune system recognizes "legitimate rape" molecules on sperm.

And @35: If the party offers no value, why do you continue to support it? There are certainly corrupt politicians in both parties, but only the Republican party today offers a plurality if not majority of politicians who outright deny basic scientific facts - evolution, global warming, "trickle-down economics" that even its inventor (David Stockman) says doesn't work, efficacy of comprehensive sex ed and modern contraceptive techniques, the fruitlessness of outlawing pot, and on and on. The party has gone from being the conclave of Eisenhower (the most pro-science president since Jefferson) to being an intellectual joke. What positive things does it offer that you think people should support?

The Wonkette article says there are 32,000 rapes that result in pregnancy every year. If there is a 1 in a million chance of this happening, as the quote in @32 suggests, that means there are 32 billion rapes a year in the US. Since there are about 150 million women in the US, that means there are 213 rapes per woman per year. So, each American woman is raped an average of just over 4 times a week. Yikes! Key word is "helps" because its not guaranteed. Which is the problem with what he said. Theres no reasonable way to test or prove it... plus it implies that in all rapes a woman's main concern would be not getting pregnant, which is stupid and simplistic.

There's a whole lot of evil intent packed in Teh Crazy here. I'll take a whack at it:
1. Pregnancy is a woman's fault. Men are not responsible.
2. If a woman gets pregnant, it wasn't rape. This reminds me of the water test for witches; if she sank, she was innocent. But dead.
3. There is no legitimate justification for a "rape or incest" exception in abortion law--because clearly no pregnancy would ever result from such activity.
4. The only women requesting abortions are Slutty McSlutterson "Give it to me like a stallion, big boy!" types who should be punished for doing it and liking it.

hey hold on people. @62 is right. there is a large, fascinating and well-supported literature on "post-copulatory female mate choice", "cryptic female choice" or just plain old "post-copulatory sexual selection." There are many species of animals of many taxa in which females can influence which sperm from which male are more likely to reach her egg(s). or species in which females can simply decline to allow any sperm to reach egg. the female reproductive tract and female body is capable of some really unbelievable shit. there are also studies of pregnant mammals which show that stress causes abortions (primates).
HOWEVER, just because this crap that Akin is spewing has some biological plausibility (and it may not, not in humans), it does NOT mean that it should dictate human behavior or be applied to humans.
after all, human females have a very powerful post-copulatory mate choice option. it is called ABORTION.
but stop piling on 62 for having the guts to point out truth? just because someone has described this phenomenon in other animals species doesn't mean that it has to be applied to humans.
and read up on those terms. it's really amazing what those animals can do.

ok 62 is somewhat right. it post-copulatory female mate choice has been proven to happen in non-human animals. but not in humans. so if 62 is suggesting that it is likely to happening in humans...well, that insinuation should be walked back a bit.
but it DOES have biological plausibility at least.
