Speaking of Renaming Lakes, I Have a Suggestion...

Posted by on Wed, Aug 22, 2012 at 7:52 AM

Eli this morning writes about his fascination with the Committee on Geographic Names, which is considering changing the name of Soap Lake and Squamish Harbor. While they're at it, I suggest changing the name of Lake Stevens to "Lake Africa." I mean, just look at it:

Now, I've also been to Lake Stevens and I can't tell you my idea would be super popular there.

They should also change the name of Lake Union to Lake Uterus.

Governor Stevens was a racist who lead the effort to wipe Indians out of this state. A lake named after him should be named lake Africa.

Pithy Name 3
There is a lake near where I grew up out in Maple Valley (don't think less of me) called Pipe Lake.

Pipe Lake. So majestic and scenic.

Will Lake Africa give me cholera?

That looks just as much like South America as it does Africa.

Lake Stevens is shaped a lot more like the nation of India than it is Africa. It even has Assam (and connected provinces) in the northeast.

Lake India would also be super awesome. Let's us give a tip o' the hat to the Indians who used to live there.

@8) This is not a bad idea. In either case, Sri Lanka or Madagascar are on the wrong side.

Why are some lakes named with "Lake" at the beginning and some with "Lake" at the end?

For example, Lake Wobegone or Lake Superior... versus Crystal Lake or Salt Lake?

Lake Poodle Head would go over better. (see it? She's looking down and sniffing some cat poop)

Also, is this the appropriate comment thread in which to discuss later-era Celtic Frost?

I never realized it was that shape. Lake India or Lake Africa I'm fine with either.

When I moved here nine years ago, this is EXACTLY what I said.

Also, the old folks up here wouldn't take to it well, but I think the kids and the 20-somethings would actually love it. White people love to think they're kinda black.
