The young man to the far left of this picture is Ryan. I talked to him because I was interested in the sign he was holding—the Gary Johnson sign with the two Ron Paul-ppendages sticking out from it like legs. Ron Paul fans have traditionally not gotten along well with Gary Johnson fans for reasons that confuse me. The two men are much more similar than, say, Paul and Obama, but Paul fans are apoplectic at the thought that some of their ranks might jump ship and vote for Johnson. Ryan feels differently. "I'm a libertarian," he says, and "if my prediction of Mitt being the nominee comes true," a Johnson vote is the only recourse. He says some Paul fanatics are pledging to run a Ron Paul write-in campaign, but he doesn't think that'll make a difference. "I'm a logical thinker," Ryan says. "If you like the libertarian philosophy, vote libertarian."

Does he know why Paul fans have been so resistant to Johnson thus far? Not really. Ryan chalks it up to passion, but he thinks a lot of Paul fans will come around to his way of thinking if Paul doesn't become the Republican nominee. Once people take a look at Johnson's record as governor of New Mexico, he thinks they'll realize they're fighting the wrong enemy. Ryan met Johnson at the P.A.U.L. festival and found him easy to talk to and a very convincing debater. Ryan says they talked about legalizing marijuana, and he liked what Johnson had to say about ending pot prohibition. Ryan goes on to list many of the uses for hemp. Did you know they can make plastic bottles out of hemp? Ryan thinks that's great. It is pretty neat, come to think of it.
