If Obama Wins This Round...

Posted by on Wed, Sep 12, 2012 at 8:47 AM

...Rmoney is finished:

Mitt Romney's sharply-worded attack on President Obama over a pair of deadly riots in Muslim countries last night has backfired badly among foreign policy hands of both parties, who cast it as hasty and off-key, released before the facts were clear at what has become a moment of tragedy.
Romney keyed his statement to the American Embassy in Cairo's condemnation of an anti-Muslim video that served as the trigger for the latest in a series of regional riots over obscure perceived slights to the faith. But his statement — initially embargoed to avoid release on September 11, then released yesterday evening anyway — came just before news that the American Ambassador to Libya had been killed and broke with a tradition of unity around national tragedies, and of avoiding hasty statements on foreign policy. It was the second time Romney has been burned by an early statement on a complex crisis: Romney denounced the Obama Administration's handling of a Chinese dissident's escape just as the Administration negotiated behind the scenes for his departure from the country.

I really thought no one could be worse than Dubya. I mean, I thought Dubya was a joke and that the GOP would never allow that kind of stupid near their candidacy again (at least for a generation).

I was wrong.

Yes, but let's not forget that Obama chose to aid the Libyan rebels. If the anti-American violence in that country escalates he may regret that decision.

@2 are you claiming that the Libyan rebels are responsible for what happened last night? Cause it sure seems like it.

@2,
Possibly, but we also don't know what would have happened had Obama chosen NOT to aid them.
If anti-American sentiment still arose, he could have regretted not aiding them as well.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

LOL, I forgot about the Chinese dissident and Romney's debacle on that.

@3, highly unlikely. The US and Stevens in particular was very popular among the Libyan rebels and Libyan people over all. Who he wasn't popular with was Gaddhafi hardliners who continue revenge attacks across the country. It would't surprise me in the least to learn that they were involved.

@5 I know that.

It's just that @2 statement seems to suggest that the Libyan rebels are responsible for what happened last night. And to suggest that is rather simplistic and wrong.

This reminds me... when was the last time Gay Dude for Romney finished a comment with a cocky "XX days til the election?" Kind of hard to express such confidence when the campaign is burning down all around you.

When did the media really become this fucking incompetent? Was it around the time that they decided that 'mis-categorized' was a polite synonym for 'lied through his bleached teeth?'

I just want one, ONE person from the lamestream, librul media to say the truth - that Mitt Romney is LYING.

@2: No, if Obama hadn't supported the rebels with air support, this may not have happened. And if Obama hadn't supported the rebels with air support, Qaddafi would have surely slaughtered HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE in Benghazi and likely elsewhere.

Yesterday's actions are not so obviously an "anti-American" action as you might like to think. It looks more to me like a bunch of local religious leaders trying to burnish their credibility by stirring up a response to something of little consequence.

From Americablog:

Mitt Romney got the capital of Libya wrong in his opportunistic statement this morning criticizing the President about his handling of the attacks against the US embassy in Cairo and the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Romney referred in his statement to the "embassies" and particularly to "our embassy at Benghazi, Libya."

Any first year international relations student knows that our diplomatic offices in the capital are "embassies," and our offices in cities that are not the capital are "consulates." This means that Romney either had no idea what the capital of Libya was (Tripoli, obviously), or he had no idea what the difference is between embassies and consulates, which is so basic diplomacy 101 that it's frightening that Mitt Romney wants to be commander in chief in four months and had no idea about the difference.

It's amazing how the right can hate Obama so much based on a bunch of made up stuff, but support Romney when there's so much real fuck-uppery surrounding him. If his campaign is based on "I can get things done", he's really has a strange way of demonstrating it with this amateur hour bullshit.

I watched Romney's statement this morning. In terms of what politicians seem to value, I guess the best you can say is he didn't flip-flop. But basically, I imagine he would support bombing Libya and Egypt today.

I'm almost tired of going down this road, but if a Dem candidate tried to undermine the President the way Romney has, Republicans would be calling for said candidate to be tried for treason. I also think this is hilarious coming off of his own foreign policy expert saying foreign policy was just a distraction Obama was using to because of the economy. The real distraction is that Romney seems as fluent in Foreign policy as Sarah Palin.

This should disqualify Romeny, but American voters are notoriously disinterested in foreign policy for the most part. Won't affect election.

@2 So you're a supporter of Ghaddafi, then? One of the craziest, murderous dictators who was responsible for countless terrorist attacks, among them the Pan Am flight at Lockerbie?

That doesn't surprise me one bit.

Charles,
First of all, my regrets to the family of Chris Stevens and the other murdered Americans in Libya and to the victims in Cairo as well. It is senseless especially considering it is because of a reaction to a film. This is very tragic and remains precarious for Obama. I wouldn't politicize it (nor should Romney or Obama). It could backfire for BOTH with the consequences for Obama and America far greater. BTW, I've never heard of BuzzFeed so I'm not sure of it's credibility.

For the record, this campaign isn't a boxing match (round). There is a world in flux for better or for worse swirling around. Events happen. Obama as President must reckon with them just as Bush did before (coincident or not around election time). And clearly, Romney as his opponent for the general election must tread lightly on these unfortunate situations.

If the election were held to today, Obama would win largely because of incumbency. But some arguably, incredible event(s) could take place between now & Nov. 6th that could doom or enhance his presidency/election chances. This election is far from over.

Romney is unfit to govern. He's rich amateur playing politics. In situations such as this only a fool rushes out in front and shoots from the hip. The wise man waits for the facts to come out and responds in measured tones. To a person the Republican foreign policy leaders are distancing themselves from Romney.

Rmoney, or Rummy, is obviously the Anti-Christ, along with his big-eared familiar, Ryan.

He should lose easily, excepting for the fact very few Ameritards realize who own the majority of those voting machine companies, which figures; most Ameritards simply don't know anything as they wallow blissfully in ignorance --- their choice!

So Romney and his magic underwear could still end up in the White House.

So what's the major difference between Rmoney, who stands for the complete privatization of America, and President Obama, who stands for the complete privatization of America?

President Obama has fully implemented the criminalization of dissent with all those preemptive arrests of his, extended and expanded upon from the Bush administration, thus rendering impotent any future SCOTUS openings.

Yet the Talking Twats continue to yell, "Supreme Court choices, Supreme Court choices"!

Doesn't matter after the criminalization of dissent, dearies, but somehow your simpleton minds can't comprehend this?

It's unfortunate that - at a time of increasing geopolitical instability - we're left with the image of Rmoney salivating and panting (remember the easily-swayed weasel in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, being deluded by both the Rooster and the Dawg) over the prospect of pinning the blame on Obama and thereby getting a leg up in the race.

Well, all I know is that, if Rmoney's got a leg up, it's only good for one thing. And it's a pretty depressing thought, too.

@2, @3, @4: There is no such thing as "the Libyan rebels." Like most upheavals going on in the world, there were multiple groups involved. Some anti-US, some pro-US, but all anti-Qaddafi (or however we spell it now).

The NTC, which was the most prominent political arm of the revolt, is pro-US.

@ 27, let's not forget that Bush did NOT get a plurality of the vote in 2000. (Re-elections are another matter, especially in time of war, but he wouldn't have been reelected if he hadn't "won" in the first place.)

Make no mistake, it's still Obama's election to lose, and the past couple of weeks have been absolutely no help to Romney. This episode is no help, either.

Free Lunch 30
The GOP surrogates without a job to protect - Gingrich, Palin, Priebus (who will have a job waiting on Fox when Romney loses), along with the in-office-but-insane (Steve King) are circling their wagons around Romney.

However, the savvy ones concerned about their own political necks (Cantor, Boehner, McConnell - even Ryan) are not touching this with a ten-foot pole.

@27 - Sad but true. I doubt the 15% of Ohio Republicans who believe that Romney deserves more credit for killing Bin Laden than Obama will be swayed by this shamefully amateur episode.

However, between this "foreign-policy" disaster and Romney shitting on our troops last week (and later doubling-down on shitting on them), Obama may pick up yet another normally-GOP leaning demographic: members of our armed forces.

Please make him stop.
