First, Mitt Romney tried to shorten a statement by President Obama into a gaffe, you-didn't-build-that style. Here's President Obama's full statement:

“I’ve learned some lessons,” Obama said, reflecting on his first term as president. “Most important is you can’t change Washington from inside, only from the outside. That’s how some of our biggest accomplishments like health care got done — mobilizing the American people.”

The president went on to state that if he were to win a second term, he would want "to concentrate having a much more constant conversation with the American people so they can put pressure on Congress to move issues forward.”

The Romney campaign, which is always willing to bank on the short attention span of the American people, shortened that whole quote to "you can’t change Washington from inside." And so Romney gave a speech today in which he said "I can change Washington. I will change Washington. We’ll get the job done from the inside — Republicans and Democrats will come together."

Problem is, this is a flip-flop for Romney, who, back in 2007, said, "I don't think you change Washington from the inside. I think you change it from the outside." If Mitt Romney didn't have a past, like some sort of a terrifying science fiction monster who only existed in the present thanks to a terrible quantum accident, he would probably be walloping President Obama in the polls right now.

* These headlines are just going to get more and more convoluted, aren't they? They'll just need more and more specificity until finally by Election Day, it's "Romney Flip-Flops on Yesterday's Sarcastic Misquotation of a Previous Flip-Flop by Romney, Which Rectified an Earlier Flip-Flop on Not Repealing Obamacare, Which Was Originally Stated Sarcastically By Romney, as a Comment on an Earlier Flip-Flop."
