Sierra Club Slams Gael Tarleton on Port Pollution

Posted by on Tue, Sep 25, 2012 at 4:01 PM

I've lost track of the number of rounds we've now gone over the question of Port Commissioner Gael Tarleton's eviro cred. Here comes another round, courtesy of a blistering release from the local Sierra Club:

In her election campaign against progressive champion Noel Frame, Port Commissioner Tarleton recently and publicly attacked her fellow commissioners and a local activist for their leadership on an issue of national importance to the Sierra Club—minimizing diesel pollution from port trucking. This is astonishing behavior for someone wishing to work with legislators in Olympia representing the progressive citizens of Seattle. But as a port commissioner who stood aside while polluters derailed key federal legislation needed by ports around the nation, and as a candidate who has accepted maximum donations from some of those same polluters, it may make sense.

Ouch. Read the whole thing. (.pdf)

The 36th should be sending someone to Olympia who is a clear progressive champion, someone who can safely push strong legislation and move the whole legislature on key issues like protecting Puget Sound and creating good jobs. As a commissioner, Tarleton has clearly pissed off progressives like the Sierra Club in the areas she has actually had to legislate. If she ever gets to Olympia, the chances are high we'll be seeing similar declarations from activists for women's rights, transportation alternatives, marijuana legalization and more.

Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown. 2
Tarleton's opponent, Noel Frame, is a stooge for the teamsters, among other unions. Sierra Club, among other things, are the teamsters' useful idiots. Does a diesel exhaust-spewing teamster really care about the environment?

The Sierra Club has turned itself into just another band of local political hacks. Sad.

Haven't been following the back and forth, but this criticism has a desperate feel.

I live in the 36th and keep getting invited to climb aboard the Frame Train. What's on it? I thought trains were bad because they had coal?

Jesus, it's like a greatest hits list of slog trolls. All we're missing is a little GDFR action (unless noted concern troll Mr G is actually him), a little SROTU, and Loveschild, bless her bat-shit crazy little heart).

Frame is to environmental issues like Teamsters are to Sierra Club, that is she conveniently uses them when she wants a new vehicle to get her where she is going. Just because Teamsters and SC wanted (McLendon's?) natural gas trucks at Western Ports doesn't mean our Port had to buy them. Isn't this what that Press Release essentially says? Here's a news flash: http://earthfix.kuow.org/energy/article/… . The big scoop is the relationship b/t Labor, Natural Gas, and environmentalists who lobby for them. Or the unlimited $ they are pouring into a race in the 36th to dilute the truth.
