What Do You Think of the Iron Man 3 Trailer?

Posted by on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 12:55 PM

After a bunch of pre-trailer trailers, which I guess is a thing now, Marvel has finally released the trailer for Iron Man 3, and here it is:

Well?

Frankly, it looks like a totally bad ass part one of Avengers 2. Think about it: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America were chapters 1-5 of a 6 part Avengers story.

This time it's Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy as chapters 1-5 of the 6 part Avengers 2 story.

Then we start over one last time again with Ant-Man, and they already said The Incredible Hulk 2 with Ruffalo is in the pipeline, so Avengers 3 will probably be Ant-Man, then Thor 3, Captain America 3, and Hulk 2 in some order before Avengers 3. Then the SHIELD TV series or mini-series coming next year with cameos from all of them that Joss is creating will figure in, too, somehow.

I'll lay odds:

Avengers 2: Civil War
Avengers 3: Infinity Gauntlet

That fact that they're angling for and setting up an EIGHTEEN film blockbuster series is noting less than ludicrous for the sheer gargantuan size of their irradiated Hulk balls.

As for this film, between this trailer and IMDB for Iron Man 3:

Tony's growing darkness (a staple of the comics, Demon In A Bottle, etc).; Rhodey as War Machine; Iron Patriot; Extremis; Mandarin; that weird masked gunman with a Captain America tattoo--bet you that's the Winter Soldier!; and a raft of hired thug bad guys for Robert Downey Jr and Don Cheadle to beat the crap out of. Radioactive Man is on the list! That alone is worth $10.

It's too bad David Carradine waxed himself while waxing himself. He would have made a great fake Asian.

The Iron Man ones never did a thing for me. I loved the Avengers, etc., but these left me cold. Perhaps I'm Downeyed out for one lifetime. The trailer's not much more than a CGI parade, though Guy Pearce is always good to see.

I really like the part where Stark Industries gets taken over by Mandarin, the current CEO of Bain Capital.

@3 I love Downey like mad, but the Iron Mans were never my favorites either of the series, despite how much I love the character in the books. Thor and Hulk by far were my favorites, even though I've had a raging man crush on Chris Evans ever since he was in Fantastic Four. I think we've seen every film of his since then, even The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond.

It looks like Kingsley's Manadarin is going to be more of a Bin Laden-type terrorist (which was set up in IM 1), rather than the much more stereotyped Cold War generic Asian baddie I remember from the 1960's. Besides, he already phoned in that one-note schtick with "Thunderbirds", so I'd expect something a little more nuanced from him this time around.

@4:

Yes, that did seem quite reminiscent of the crash scene from "Generations", did it not?

So the bad guy... wears an Iron Man-esque suit based on a design he ripped off from Iron Man.

They did that in Iron Man 1. And Iron Man 2.

@13 welcome to the world of Iron Man. A lot of the stories revolve around this topics:

A) Tony's massive personal demons.

B) Tony's brilliance that farts out world changing ideas the way that you or I fart out underwear changing gas. Unfortunately, as with any technology, it gets out of control despite his efforts to heavily lock it down, or inspires similar things from both good and bad parties. He's almost like a change-inducing tidal wave, and he has to mitigate or undo the harm from that change. That's actually Iron Man at it's best.

B--short version) Dudes in ultra powered metal suits punching the shit out of each other.

If Ben Kingsley can convincingly play Gandhi, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he can manage to play a comic-book Mandarin. I've really enjoyed a few of Kingsley's darker roles.

That said, Iron Man has been a mixed bag so far. IM1 was awesome, and I thought Downey was fantastic. IM2 was an exercise in excessive CGI porn and bad scriptwriting, and a total waste of the talents of Mickey Rourke. So IM3 could go either way. I'll withhold judgement until I see actual reviews.
