John Sununu: Colin Powell Endorsed President Barack Obama Because He Is Black

Posted by on Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 9:27 PM

HuffPo:

Top Romney surrogate John Sununu suggested Thursday night that Colin Powell endorsed President Barack Obama in part because the two men are the same race.

Sununu, who served as governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989, made the comment during an appearance on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

Tomorrow will be the third day of negative Romney news, and a second day of Colin Powell's endorsement. If this were the real world, such incompetency would have sunk Romney's chances.

My stepdad is one of those voting for Romney simply because he's white. While he doesn't want a Mormon president, his racist feelings are stronger, so he'll hold his nose and vote the white guy. This was a guy who used to be a moderate Republican and supported women's right to choose, but too many years of Fox News has slowly destroyed his brain.

@1 - Fox News has done a lot of damage. It has given people permission to simply ignore any news they don't like as biased liberal propaganda. Thus, Mitt Romney and his people get a pass on the stupid shit they do and say, and a Catholic charity loses money because they dared to mention that Paul Ryan's faux charity was faux.

Surprise! A prominent Republican is a big ole racist!

Oh, wait, that is not a surprise. It is a tautology. I'm sorry, I got my terminology mixed up.

I wonder, daily, if the Republican Party can sink any lower and, daily, they prove that they can.

Well, we haven't actually SEEN a YouTube video of a Republican raping a new-born baby right before they eat it, so, you know, they've still got a ways to go.

Colin Powell had a fan club in the '90s but lost 100% of his credibility stumping for Gulf War II. He was always a fig-leaf for Cheney's agenda, cast aside when his purpose was fulfilled.

His endorsement, like Meatloaf's, is meaningless-to-unhelpful.

I am quite sure someone will argue that is not true since neither Powell nor Obama are actually black.

@7 It doesn't matter if they did. Fox News would say that eating babies is nutritious, and that it would have grown up to be a drug-using drain on society.

Akin has already clarified his statement.

We can't have an "honest and respectful dialogue" as long as the Left willfully distorts the positions they disagree with.

Cunt.

Sununu is a horrid person. He's right down there with Ann Coulter in terms of nastiness. There must be something about chronic anger that leads to long lives, because all these nasty old bastards just refuse to die.

You know that saying about how you hate the things in other people you hate in yourself? You accuse people of doing the things you do, because you know people do them - because you do them.

John Sununu is a racist who is only voting for Romney because he is white. He proves this is the case by accusing Powell of being as shallow and cowardly as he is.

John Sununu can, of course, go fuck himself.

My uncle hates Obama and will not vote for him because he's black, even though my uncle also hates Republicans and doesn't want Romney in the White House. He just can't bring himself to vote for a black man.

The really sad, strange and confusing part in all of this is that our family has black ancestry mixed in there.

No, his name is not Uncle Ruckus. http://youtu.be/LtytAfR-2hI

I think the sum total of all reasons to vote for Mitt Romney is that he's white. He certainly is not a better candidate on any policy (if you can actually figure out what he actually stands by, which is incoherent thanks to all of his lies and pandering). He's not a better candidate in terms of government experience (Obama has more). He's not a better candidate in terms of his private sector experience, because all he did was take a family fortune and exploit government handouts to the wealthy to become even more filthy rich. He's not more charismatic or more intelligent or more well-spoken.

He's white. That's his whole appeal. And the sad thing is, there are enough racist white people to make this a really close election, and just maybe let him win it.

Republicans have been saying the only reason whites voted for Obama last time was BECAUSE he is black .. not surprised by this sentiment .. more surprised that Sununu is an official Romney surrogate and isn’t savvy enough to keep his mouth shut. They obviously thought this statement would help them.

I agree that Colin Powell is indeed racist.....yes reverse racism is alive and well.
For that matter 98% of African Americans vote for Obama - this is racist too.
Why was it wrong for Sununu to state what is obvious. I voted for Obama in 08 but the economy is being destroyed...not to mention the fiasco with fast and furions and now the Libya massacre. We are the laughing stock of the whole world. Time to give someone else a chance. I believe many of you are just so misinformed. Who are the true racists in this country....I mean come on Obama could not have won had it not been for the white vote and for that matter he very well could win again with the white vote. Whenever there is a black canidate or Hispanic canidate for anything - blacks and hisplanics always vote their race.......I ask again who are the real racists. Dont be brainwashed by political correctness.....

Donna56: "We are the laughing stock of the whole world."

Since when did conservatives care what the rest of the world thinks? And yet, when a combative conservative shows up on this blog, they're very much inclined to use the "laughing stock" meme. Here's a very angry Mister G recently on light rail in Seattle: And then you wonder why people look at you and laugh.

I'd much rather debate the merits of policy and let the chips fall as to whether anyone else laughs at us.

Not sure what the Romney policy is that would have prevented a Libya "massacre." An unfortunate turn of phrase considering that, if it hadn't been for Hillary's diplomacy, we'd have been looking at a real massacre of tens of thousands of Libyans in Benghazi--at which point folks like Donna56 would be calling for Obama's head for not preventing a "Libya massacre."

About Donna's broader point: Whenever there is a black canidate or Hispanic canidate for anything - blacks and hisplanics always vote their race....... Well, first, I've noticed a lot of folks lately spelling "candidate" canidate. It's like a contagion. But as for blacks voting for blacks, let's keep in mind that Obama's share of the black vote in 2008 wasn't that much higher than Gore or Kerry's were.

Cressona - I am not a conservative nor am I a liberal. My children are Hispanic. The church I attend is at least 50% African American. And nope I am not a racist....
Sorry for the spelling error - must recheck before I send....but no matter.
I suppose what could have been done in Libya is that as soon as they started sending out an SOS special ops or something should have been done. Those 2 men - forget their names - held those crazed people off for over 8 hours - all the while our government watched what was happening - via drone But who am I ? I think what bothers me most is the false information we have been fed regarding Libya - huge coverup. Not to mention Fast and Furious - 40 thousand Mexican citizens many of them young people were killed with American arms. This was allowed by our government and I need to know why.
What if 98% of whites voted for a white candidate (cksp) - what would we be called - of course whites would be called racist and you know it. I just do not understand why a white person is always - ALWAYS required to be above it all - but the same is not required of other races - Oh and just in case anyone is confused - Most Hispanics are Caucasian - It was I believe in the 50s that Democrats decided to make them a special group and started calling them Hispanic. I believe the intention was to divide and conquer. I am so sick of the race thing. I really am.
Middle America is hurting and African American middle class is really hurting. We need jobs. President Obama can only create government jobs. We needreal jobs to return to this counrty. And this should have nothing to do with skin color.

Further imagine if a white Republican of the stature of Colin Powell endorsed a white Democrat over a black Republican. There would name calling - marches - quite possibly even riots. The implication would be obvious and yes it would be wrong.

Free Lunch 28
@24 - Blacks who voted for Obama because he is black doesn't demonstrate the same kind of racism as whites voting against Obama because he is black.

In one case you are voting FOR someone because of their race; in the other you are voting AGAINST someone because of their race. Blacks weren't voting for Obama because they they couldn't abide a white president; otherwise, 98% of blacks would never have voted in any presidential election before.

Sure, both are racist, but you are wrong to equate them.

I think it's simply wonderful that people like Donna56 are suddenly finding us here on slog, and are so eager to dive right in and post about their victimhood.

I mean, just think of it: Donna joined our little corner of the world at 12:53pm today, and already she has told us three time of how oppressed white people are. What pluck!

The problem Catalina is that you believe you are a victim and in doing so you become a victim. Are you saying white people are oppressed?? If we are to move beyond race it would need to include everyone in order for it to be valid.
And to Free Lunch you absolutely do not make any sense or maybe I understood you correctly. What you said is that it is ok for a black person to vote on race but it is not ok for a white person to vote on race, which is my point exactly. Even by trying to say it in an intelligent way you prove how an African American will only vote Black - Is this not a racist statement??
But lets get back on track here. This is not about race, but rather pulling this country back from the brink. Romney has the economic acumen to hopefully reverse the course we have now taken. If our deficit is not reduced NOW all of us will sink into 3rd world oppression.....all of us except the very elite. Lets hope something works.
Isn't it time for some little green men to come down and rescue us all from ourselves :)

The thing about folks like Donna56 is that they keep coming up with ways to distract us from the core issues, the issues that are the core issues to the economic elites that either control or manipulate folks like Donna56--issues of taxes, regulation, the social safety net, social mobility, education, infrastructure.

So the elites and their stooges want to talk about:
* Racial resentment.
* The 47% and this made-up victimhood.
* Benghazi. Yes, Donna56, we've all got Benghazi on the brain.
* "The Fast and the Furious," a program which started under the Bush administration, if I recall correctly.

There's a "history repeats itself" quality to all this.

People today think the Civil War was fought over slavery, but that's only partially true. Union soldiers like one of my ancestors volunteered to risk their lives because they saw the federal government as the champion of the little guy against the Southern oligarchs who wanted to concentrate power in the hands of the few and devalue their labor with slave labor. When Lincoln talked about America being "the last best hope on earth," he was saying that in the context of the setbacks European democratic revolutions had faced against the feudal establishments. And poor Southern whites were duped by the plantation owners into fighting against their own interests by their need to still have a place above Southern blacks.

I suggest taking a look at the new book The Union War by Gary Gallagher.

Today, instead of plantation owners, we have plutocrats like Mitt Romney's Bain buddy, Ed Conard, who must be snickering when Mitt talks about getting tough on China. Folks like Conard can't ship jobs over to China fast enough, as Conard explained in a moment of frankness.

Donna56, you're either a hired gun or a poor soul who's been duped, and judging by your literacy level, I'm guessing the latter.

Cressona why would you insult someone just because they have a different opinion from yourself? I dont get the resentment towards me. To be honest I only happened upon this site when I pulled up a headline. Sorry I invaded your sacred space. I did not realize that this required one to carefully construct and then edit their post. Just thought a quick note stating my thoughts would suffice. I know sometimes life can be hard and it sounds like maybe things have happened in your life that have caused you to project back that hurt onto others
You are misinformed in regards to our economy. The path it is on now will only result in further hardship for the middle class. I am not stupid as you imply. On the contrary.
I'll leave you to your small minded friends who only want to mirror back to you what you want to hear. You will remain forever stuck in your small little world because you are unable to engage otherwise. I pity you. And thats what you want Cressona is pity....
and nope Im not going to read this before I post because you say I must. You dont deserve an edit or check.....ciao

Because you're opinion is stupid and racist.
