Is This the Worst Version of "America the Beautiful" Ever?

Posted by on Fri, Oct 26, 2012 at 12:04 PM

Apparently, this video of Meat Loaf slaughtering "America the Beautiful" at a Romney campaign event last night has been put up and taken down all over YouTube, so you should watch it while you can before the takedown notices arrive:

SO BAD. I love watching Romney's face as he realizes how awful it is. If this was a Democratic event, Republicans would be calling it treasonous.

Holy crap. If anyone sits through the first minute or so thinking it's not all that bad, you gotta skip to 1:45. Ouch. Makes me wonder if Meatloaf was a left-wing plant.

In addition to Mr. Loaf's atrocious singing as he hams it up near the end, there's also the bit where Mitt is invited to join in, and instead stands there like a plank of wood. Mojo Nixon once postulated that everyone had some Elvis in them, except the Michael J Fox character Alex Keaton. I think we've found another one.

By "make America a shining city on a hill" they mean reduce the county to a post-apocalyptic remnant clinging to the last of the high ground surrounded by ever-rising oceans. Covered in reflective foil to beat back the relentless solar radiation. Romney 2012!

God dammit, Meat Loaf, you know I love you, but you got a hell of a lot to learn about America the Beautiful.

Can anyone recommend a good audiologist? I need to replace my ears. Thanks, Mitt Loaf.

Wow. Mr. Loaf is actually a much better performer than that. Wonder if he was loaded? The arrangement just so horrible that he bombed it?
His performance of "Star Spangled Banner" at the '94 MLB All Star game was legendary, in a good way. This, not so much.

Suddenly Roseanne's crotch-scratching "Star Spangled Banner" doesn't seem quite so bad.

Surprisingly terrible. Mostly I am sad that the band of my HS life with the beautiful "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is now singing for Mitt Romney. I feel like my virginity has been stolen. Or something like that.

@13 Except it's a different song: America the Beautiful, which is actually an easier song to sing than the Star Spangled Banner.

Which just makes it worse.

"make America a shinning city on a hill" is a Biblical reference (Matthew 5:14) that Reagan used. I think it stems from the "America is a Christian nation"; or that "America is the New Israel"; or that America will one day establish a Christian government and be the light of the world; or that to be a good Christian = good American bullshit that is spouted. These god-bothering cherry pickers ignore Daniel 2:44.

Absolutely no fucking way that was unintentional.

You have to have serious talent to sing that bad. A merely tone-deaf ham couldn't do it.

@17 The Matthew 5:14 reference was first applied to the context of American exceptionalism via the Massachusetts Bay colony by John Winthrop in his 1630 sermon "A Model of Christian Charity," which he gave while crossing the Atlantic. I feel like it's the conservative base's harkening back to a proto-founding father: as Moses parted the Red Sea to deliver his people unto the original holy land (thereby setting the stage for Jesus), Winthrop delivered his across the pond to a new one. Ergo, Mitt Romney=American Jesus.

@ 28,

Thank you for the history lesson. Fascinating.

Yet, today's GOP venerates Reagan. And, if you Google "make America a shining city" videos of Reagan using the phrase come up. And, that phrase brings him to mind and today's GOP want that connection.
