I'm in the Wrong Business

Posted by on Fri, Nov 2, 2012 at 4:46 PM

If, as expected, President Obama wins and the Democrats retain control of the US Senate, it would be tempting to label this election as a huge defeat for Karl Rove and his billionaire-funded Super PACs. But Krugman wonders: "What if we’ve been misunderstanding Rove?"

We’ve been seeing him as a man dedicated to helping angry right-wing billionaires take over America. But maybe he’s best thought of instead as an entrepreneur in the business of selling his services to angry right-wing billionaires, who believe that he can help them take over America. It’s not the same thing.

Man, I got to get myself in on that scam! Then I could be credible (and wealthy), just like Karl Rove.

So basically Rove is Tim Eyman on the national level?

To be fair, I've always thought that more-or-less about both Herman Cain and Michael Steele. Both were painted as incompetents, but I think it's because neither really gave a shit about winning the race/helping the party so much as cashing in for themselves from the RNC's desperation for black leadership. And more power to them.

I've been amused by the fake super pacs pretending to support Allen West. They solicit contributions for him and then don't spend it on him. If you wanted to pick out a more credulous group, could it be the Tea Party?

Alternatively, you could read books and do research and learn about his days back in the Nixon White House, and how he was spurred to fight fire with fire against the Democrats, using their same techniques against them.

But that would be what Generation X, all hard and everything.

@Bailo: Ye gods, you freak. Because, I guess, that venal craven crook Nixon so deserved to win anything more than a contest for the local dog-catcher.

What do you smoke, Bailo, and just how many of your waking hours are spent smoking it?

His firm Cross Roads Medial LLC places the TV ads. The standard cut for that service is 15%. The PACs he controls have collected and spent sevreal hundred million dollars and he has taken his 15% off the top. Old turdblossom is becoming a very wealthy man.

And Bailo, true to form, goes completely silent when called out on his bullshit.
C'mon John, we know you compulsively refresh the threads you post in to see what shit you managed to stir up.

Cat got your tongue, Bailo?

Do you think Rove is alone? the majority of politicians are just like him.

Barack Obama did not support Marriage Equality four years ago. In fact, The Justice Department compared homosexuality to child abuse and incest, and rigorously defended DOMA. It was not until popular opinion shifted in favor of Marriage Equality that Joe Biden led the President to a more highly evolved state.

Do you not remember Lieutenant Dan Choi handcuffing himself to the White House fence because Obama would not end DADT?

Maggie Gallagher knows she is on the wrong side of history. She understands that her niche market is collapsing like a dying star, and this is why she is quietly socking away whatever millions are donated to NOM is these final few years before the SCOTUS renders the fight against Marriage Equality moot.

Sarah Palin cashed in, first by becoming a Faux News anchor and then by going Rouge on book tours. Then she miked it on the Discovery channel.

There are very few people at the federal level that are in this for altruistic reasons. Everyone is in it for the money. Rove, Dick Morris, Mark Penn, John Edwards, you name it. Corruption is to politics what ants are to a picnic. Some ants are drawn by the money, some by the power. Very few are drawn by their morals and ethics. Maybe Bernie Sanders, but that's it.

I work at a direct mail company that fulfills orders for a lot of extreme right wingers: Bachmann, Issa, Santorum, etc.

The guys who work in that department, the ones ordering statistics models for those republican's campaigns, are serious, die-hard, extreme right wingers themselves.

They all hope Obama is re-elected. Why? Because their business will skyrocket if he is. The candidates they work for will go apeshit and their donors will trip over themselves giving them money.

If a republican is elected, or even worse, if a republican is elected AND the senate and house also are republican majority controlled, they'll lose business.

It's strange, but at least they're honest about it.

@10 I don't think Mittens is in it for the money. He's already got the money. Someone with Obama's personality and education could get rich easily enough without becoming President. Political big shots are often motivated more by ego than altruism, but I don't think many of them are in it for the money.

Tacoma Traveler @10, ah yes, Barack Obama = Karl Rove. The president is an amoral mercenary who has no core values and is just in politics to cash in. I know you get some stiff competition from the likes of Supreme Ruler and Gay Dude, but congratulations, you have my nomination for most imbecilic comment of this week, if not this whole election season.

I know it's hard for you to comprehend, but elected officials aren't there to wear their hearts on their sleeve and get way out ahead of public opinion by fullthroatedly agreeing with you on social issues. That is, unless they're reading the book "The Loser's Guide to Being a Loser Like Me, in Politics and Life," by Tacoma Traveler.

If Barack Obama had been out there flying the gay pride flag in 2008 and doing his best to get a 100% rating from folks like you, he would never have been elected. If he had started doing so once in office, he wouldn't be in position to be re-elected now. And here's the thing I know your small brain finds so hard to process. If he'd established himself from Day 1 as "the first gay president," he would have accomplished far less than he has for gay rights.

Do you know anything at all about American history? Abraham Lincoln would never have abolished slavery if he'd presented himself as an abolitionist. The worst thing he could have done for the cause of abolition was to be an abolitionist.

Do all of us a favor. Please go away.

You can divide right wingers into two camps - the cynical mercenaries who peddle the ideology and the idiots who buy it.

Rove is wealthy, but I'm not sure about the credible part unless you are talking about being credible with Rightwingers.
