App Gives You Instant Election Results

Posted by on Mon, Nov 5, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Feeling anxious about tomorrow? Your anxiety is now portable with the help of Washington's new Election Results App. The app, designed and distributed by the Secretary of State's office, gives up to the minute results in all the races you care about.

News intern emeritus Mike Gore—who brought us cookies today baked by his mom (thanks, mama Gore!)—used it during the primary, and he said it was straightforward "and you can pick just the races you want to know about, so you don't have to wade through a bunch of LDs to see the results you want."

Hate using your thumbs? Just refresh Slog, where the increasingly drunk Stranger Election Control Board will be blogging nonstop tomorrow with national results, local crap, half-assed analysis, and election-party buffet reviews starting at 4:00 p.m. Tune in right here.

Wait, I tried to use this, but it didn't show another vote to turn down the Unpaid Tunnel of Doom.

Are you sure it's bug free?

I'm confused. If there is only going to be one vote tally released at 8:15 on election night, what exactly does "up t the minute results" mean, here?

Yeah, with so many votes already having been cast, shouldn't there already be tallies to report? I never thought of that (probably b/c I'm a recent transplant to a vote by mail state) before now, but when can results start being published, for referendums as well as candidates?

If you need this app, you need to read today's XKCD.

@3 - Election night. There has been some mild clammoring to allow mail-in ballots to be counted as they come in, but even if that happened, it's probably a good idea not to release any official counts until no more votes can be cast.

Thanks & makes sense, I suppose. Still it'd be really fun to see a real-time fluctuating tally if such a thing were possible. Kinda like watching Survivor to see when the lead gets big enough to become insurmountable. Not that I've ever watched Survivor, of course. That's just what I've heard happens.
