Awwww, a tear in his eye! So sweet.
It's true that his campaign and presidency has jolted political energy into sections of the electorate that just didn't have it before -- c.f. so many people so surprised that the high minority and youth turnout of 2008 was not a statistical outlier, but a lasting change in the (presidential) electorate. He's good, but I think that demographic shift, that enthusiasm and involvement among young and non-white voters, is real hope and change.

See? This is exactly the kind of person I want as president. Not some insider incubated in the corridors of power who's himself (or herself) hunting for power and glory, but someone who's been one of us, who truly believes in us, and truly wants to make our world a better place. Someone who embodies the idea of a public servant in the best sense. This is why America elected him in landslide. Throwing him out to replace him with someone like Romney would have been a tragedy of lasting regret. So glad he's back in the White House.

I hope that @4 is correct. I hope "the rest of us" will continue to stay informed and involved. We've already gotten many important thing out of Obama's presidency but this may turn out to be the most important ones... And I think this is why Republicans are seriously coming unhinged. It really is the beginning of the death of white male privilege and they are scared shitless.

Obama, demonstrating that intimate, hard-won self-knowledge -- I get teary eyed myself when he admits that seeing the campaign workers and volunteers is what reminds him that the job he's doing is worth it. How often have we found the courage of our vocation by being told, unexpectedly, in words or gestures, that people Notice Us. It seems improbable that a President might need that kind of shoring up, but life in the fishbowl must often seem lonely. And there's he Sisyphian task laid before our President, reckoning with a despicable opposition and a broken system. It's encouraging to see a President so utterly human -- so entirely focused on the ends of power rather than the means.

The answer is that white females make up a smaller proportion of the overall electorate than they used to--thirty-eight per cent in 2012 compared to forty-one per cent in 2004--and Obama wracked up enormous majorities among non-white women, who are growing in numbers. Ninety-six per cent of black women voted for Obama; seventy-six per cent of Hispanic women voted for him; and so did sixty-six per cent of women of other races, including Asians.

@16: Phrase it any way you want, but the majority of Americans voted for Obama by a margin of 3 million votes. Citing any specific demographic group does not in any way diminish the fact that Obama was the choice of the most Americans. And frankly, continuing to bring up the white women, white men, or other racially defined groups as a mitigating factor is un-American.

Single women happily and proudly voted overwhelmingly for Obama - me being one of them.
I am totally baffled that married women vote otherwise. Someone tell me, what is it about being no longer single that turns these women's brains? Is it moving to the suburbs? Or just having kids and the smug, obnoxious hormonal idiocy that sometimes results? Ie the notion that the repubs are "stronger on defense", ie they will "protect my family" better than the weakass dems?
Makes me fucking nuts.

Marriage, perhaps especially for many women, represents a Victory, perhaps even for some the Ultimate Victory. The Married are, or at least may like to think of themselves as, Winners. And most of us, I'm sure, can agree that it is enjoyable to feel like a Winner. Thus they have an interest in voting for those likely to perpetuate and enhance their Winner status.
That the success is not entire reminds me a little of how Miss Mackay attempts to break up the Brodie Set when they reach the Senior School, with its House System. Jenny, Sandy and Mary, Monica and Eunice, and Rose are divided between the four houses and forced to compete against each other in ever walk of school life. While inter-house friendships must not suffer, each house must go all out to win the shield. It was the Team Spirit. Sadly for Miss Mackay, the years of Miss Brodie, with her tales of Sybil Thorndike and Anna Pavlova, had more than inoculated them against the Team Spirit, and it was only Eunice, who was so athletic that she could not help it, who got put onto any team on which to try her spirit.

@22 I voted for Obama, and, believe it or not, I don't need stuff from the government. I'm gainfully employed, I pay income tax, and I'm a white male over 50. I also think that Bush 43 was the most egregious intergenerational economic rapist in the country's. history, and that Romney's fiscal proposals, vague as they were, made voodoo economics look rational.

That was very inspiring to watch. I wish we had someone even a tenth as impressive in UK politics. Everyone over here is so relieved - we spent the last few months dumbfounded that someone like Romney even had a chance of running.

@16: It's usually not a good idea to put a lot of stock into exit polls. Since they are not done in secret, they can't be relied upon to be truthful. If exit polls were all that accurate, then my area would have gone quite red, but instead it went blue.
