1. Something called the My Bookstore Lit Crawl starts tonight at University Book Store. It's not a lit crawl at all—it doesn't really involve alcohol, and it's one event a night for the whole week. If anything, it's more of a scavenger hunt. But still, the bookstore fans among you will probably find it interesting: As part of a celebration for a new book called My Bookstore: Writers Celebrate Their Favorite Places to Browse, Read, and Shop, five bookstores are hosting five authors who will read their contributions to the book. Here, via Third Place Books, is the schedule:
11/12 – 7pm: Ivan Doig @ University Book Store
11/13 – 7pm: Tom Robbins @ Village Books
11/14 – 7pm Jonathan Evison @ Eagle Harbor Books
11/16 - 7pm Stephanie Kallos and members of the Seattle 7 @ Third Place Books
11/20 – 7pm: Timothy Egan @ Elliott Bay Books
Apparently, if you go to three or more of the readings, you get a "passport" stamped that you can then enter into a prize drawing. That's a little too gimmicky for my tastes. Here's the reason you should go: If you like bookstores, and if you like any of these authors, you'll have a good time at these readings with a bunch of other people who like bookstores. See? Simple!
2. While we're talking about events that take place out of town, David Sedaris is reading up at Port Angeles on November 21st. Tickets are still available. If you missed Sedaris's most recent visit to Seattle, this should definitely be on your to-do list.
