I'm surprised that no one has yet followed the social media neologism route and come up with a completely novel word/name for their kid like Google, Twitter, Reddit, Zynga ...

In the future, kids will have to secure their Gmail and web address at birth to retain IP rights. Hence, unique name.

Tweet would be more appropriate for a girl.

Hashtag is obviously more of a boy's name.

Hashtag is more of a boy's name.

There was also a Brazilian kid named Facebookson - but the judge registering the birth wouldn't accept it ("not a real name"), and they successfully sued for the right to ruin their son's life.

In 10 years will anyone still be hashtagging?

@7 Exactly. Hashtag may be completely obsolete in a few years. This will be awful for the poor kid. Just ask my cousin, Be Kind Rewind.

The amazing thing is that people are doing it now!

Hashtagging sounds like something from the ARPANET when everyone had 75 baud modems...or else from telegraphs and telexs.

This is the great irony that with 1Gpbs fiber and 3-D graphics we can still say a lot with a few ASCII chars.

I foresee absolutely no problems at all.
I do not know what you people are talking about.
This will be perfectly fine once she gets to high school or college and is known to all of her friends as "Hash" or "Hashy".

The poor kid's idiot parents will receive their just desserts when the kid turns 18, at which time she will chop them into McNugget-sized pieces and store them in a freezer somewhere...

I named my boys "Baud", "Ping", and "Newsgroup", so who am I to judge. My cousin "Eight Track" named his baby girl "CB Radio", which is a lot worse.

I'm pretty sure you're going to get teased at school no matter what your name is. The idea that kids get bullied because they have a weird name is classic victim blaming. It's like saying sissy kids deserve to be bullied. In fact, kids get teased because schools are bullying incubators. Bringing up the next generation of bullies is what schools do best.

Also, I think somebody's cultural privilege is showing.
