1:51 PM: CBS News got a statement from the NRA. and here it is: "Until the facts are thoroughly known, NRA will not have any comment." And here's Michael Bloomberg's statement demanding that President Obama get to work on gun control.
1:12 PM: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is (rightly) demanding that President Obama take action on the issue of gun control. In other news, CBS News is also reporting that the deceased shooter is 20-year-old Adam Lanza. 24 year-old Ryan Lanza is undergoing questioning right now.
12:45 PM: According to the most recent police press conference going on right now, 27 people, including the shooter, are dead. That's twenty children, six adults, and the shooter.
12:30 PM: News sources seem to be tipping over into confusion at the moment. The AP just released this story:
A law enforcement official says the suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza and that his younger brother is being held for questioning as a possible second shooter. The law enforcement official says the boys' mother, Nancy Lanza, works at the school as a teacher.
The official also said Ryan Lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.
But the New York Post is saying that the shooter is 20-year-old Adam Lanza, and that his older brother, Ryan Lanza, is not a suspect.
12:23 PM: Then he quoted scripture about "heal[ing] the broken hearted," and that was it for President Obama's speech. Nothing about gun control, nothing of substance. The role of Mourner-in-Chief is an important one, but something more substantive would have been more comforting.
12:18 PM: "They had their entire lives ahead of them," President Obama says. He's pausing between sentences. "Our hearts are broken today." President Obama says we've seen this kind of shooting "too many times...these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children." President Obama says we're going to have to "take action," and do so "regardless of politics."
