Zadie Smith on the Difference Between Pleasure and Joy

Posted by on Tue, Dec 18, 2012 at 6:55 PM

You have to read this—your brain will love it.

Until quite recently I had known joy only five times in my life, perhaps six, and each time tried to forget it soon after it happened, out of the fear that the memory of it would dement and destroy everything else.

That was a pleasure to read. Thank you, Christopher.

I adore Zadie Smith.
White Teeth blew me away, and her subsequent books have been some of the best ever.
I'm looking forward to reading the latest.

Christopher, much thanks for posting your favorite reads lately. The n+1 essay you posted about the other day was excellent too (and another essay in that same issue, "How To Quit," is probably my favorite piece of writing for the year). Eager to read anything you recommend.

She's been quite prolific as of late now that NW has been published. She had a New Yorker piece last week about her reflections of Joni Mitchell.
