The Thursday Morning News

Posted by on Thu, Jan 3, 2013 at 8:58 AM

Back to school. Sandy Hook Elementary students will return to school for the first time since 20 classmates and six staff were gunned down in defense of Americans' right to maintain a well regulated militia. Classes will be held at a quickly refurbished school in a neighboring town.

We are an awful species. Five Delhi, India men have been charged with kidnap, gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman who died two weeks after a brutal December 16 attack. The five defendants could face the death penalty. A sixth attacker, a 17-year-old man, will be tried as a juvenile, and faces a maximum three-year sentence.

"The proletariat is the undertaker of capitalism." Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted Russian citizenship to actor Gerard Depardieu, who is seeking tax asylum from his native France and its 75 percent tax on incomes above 1 million euros ($1.32 million).

Well, if Congress won't pass immigration reform, perhaps Obama will just do it on his own? A new rule could provide an easier path to permanent US residency for as many as one million undocumented immigrants who are immediate relatives of US citizens and permanent residents. Under the rule, undocumented immigrants who can demonstrate that being separated from a child, parent, or spouse would create "extreme hardship" could apply for a visa without leaving the country.

No doubt President Romney would claim credit. Payroll processing firm ADP says that the private sector added 215,000 jobs in December, a stronger number than economists expected.

You can call me Al... Jazeera. Pan-Arab news network Al-Jazeera will acquire Current TV, boosting its distribution into 40 million American homes. Current TV was co-founded by Al Gore, who will net millions on the deal.

Throwing Megan a few bones. Still no NHL season, but the US trounced Canada 5-1 in the world junior semi-finals. The US will play Sweden for the gold on Saturday.

It burns! IT BURNS! Yesterday, the earth crept only 91,402,560 miles from the sun, its closest distance of the year.

Horse's ass. Tim Eyman will file another stupid, self-serving initiative today.

Goldy, shame on you. I agree with you in need for reasonable gun control legislation; but I hardly think that the very disturbed young man who mowed down those darling angles was thinking about constitutional law at the time.

California Representative Fortney Hillman "Pete" Stark leaves Congress this month after 40 years serving several San Francisco bay-area districts.

Stark was instrumental in passing health-care laws of critical importance to the unemployed/under-employed, COBRA and EMTALA.

He's another of a vanishing breed that worked cordially and effectively across the aisle.

He's also the first openly atheist member of Congress [Wikipedia].

Phoebe, Stranger writers feel no shame. They couch it in an issue devoted to Regrets, and it makes for a really good show.

Dammit Goldy, put a spoiler alert on the hockey game outcome. I will be watching it on replay tonight, and didn't want to know the outcome beforehand. Now I will be mumbling dirty words at you all day.

Does anybody else just hear the muted trombone sound from Peanuts when Phoebe concern trolls?

@6 Negative. Just a muted tuba as a lonley reminder of a story that continues to be ignored on this page.

Yes, won't someone please think of the darling angles! The acute ones, and the obtuse ones, and all the rest of the darling little angles of every degree!

@10: Actually, you could substitute "little nasty put-boogers-under-their-desks-squealing-brats" and my point would still be valid.

Damn you Al Jeezera, now I have to listen to Americans try to pronounce Qatar.

(For those who care and don't want to say "Cutter" (which makes me, ironically, want to slit my wrists) http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504803_162-5…)

"We" are an awful species? Excuse me, please leave women out if it. The male half of the species is the problem.

"A sixth attacker, a 17-year-old man, will be tried as a juvenile, and faces a maximum three-year sentence."

It looks like India, like America disagrees that the 17-year-old male is an adult man.

I don't know the facts of his involvement, but it may be a maximum three-year sentence is not unreasonable.

@12 Brits (like me) pronounce it Catarrh. I don't know which is worse.

Wait ... so it's legal to harass, hunt and string up initiative gatherers?

That sounds ... FUN!

@17 I'm British too, but I go for the guttural C. So it sounds like you're clearing Catarrh [sic]

@17,

Cutter is worse. Don't get me started on "Cobble" (Kabul). Cobble, where all the cobblers live. And all their streets are paved with cobblestones.
