Hey, sometimes you post about an obnoxious controversy and then you forget about it. And sometimes, you find out later that its resolution is totally heartwarming. Which is what happened in the case of this Slog post I put up this week on the stupid, stupid Texas A&M University student senate bill saying students should be allowed to opt out of paying fees that go toward anything to which they religiously object. Any guesses what the bill was really about? Hint: Its original title was "The GLBT Funding Opt-Out Bill." Siiiiiigh.

But I worried for naught! Sure, it proved that some assholes live in Texas, but assholes live everywhere. What happened next was great: the student body president, John Claybrook, vetoed the bill after it (sadly) passed the student senate. He said in an open letter:

After much research and deliberation, I have confidently decided to veto S.B. 65-70, The Religious Funding Exemption bill. Even without the wording that specified particular groups that would be affected in the final version of this bill, the sentiment towards the bill has not changed and has caused great harm to our reputation as a student body and to the students feeling disenfranchised by the bill...

Although
 much
 adjusted
 in
its
final
form, the good accomplished through this bill pales in comparison to the damage done. The damage must stop today. Texas A&M students represent our core value of respect exceptionally and I'm very proud of the family at this university. Now, more than ever, is the time to show great resolve and come together, treating each other like the family that we are.

You can see a picture of the big, red VETO (somehow quite satisfying) and read the letter right here.
