In the way that the only goal, maintaining high rates of growth, of the economics profession in its present state doesn't solve any real thing, the traffic engineer's goal, undoing jams, solves zip in the big picture of our present social and environmental situation. Economic growth at even a compound rate of 2 percent has no actual meaning for a society that's so wealthy that it has to socially manufacture poverty. Similarly, clearing up traffic congestion has no actual value—indeed, it makes things worse by decreasing the misery for drivers and increasing the number of cars on the road. The success of a traffic engineer, like the success of an economist, means nothing in reality but something in our distorted view of it.
