Gigabit Seattle unveiled its pricing tiers for the fiber optic broadband service it will launch in select Seattle neighborhoods next year, and I have to say, I'm jealous: $45 a month for 100 Mbps down/up service, and $80 a month for 1000 Mbps. And that's with no installation fees on a one year contract.
Gigabit Seattle will also offer 5 Mbps down/1 Mbps up for a $350 installation fee and no charge for 60 months. I currently pay considerably more than that a year for comparable DSL speeds. Such a bargain!
"We're one step closer to bringing gigabit speed broadband to Seattle," Mayor Mike McGinn said in a statement. "I'm excited to see how our residents and businesses can innovate with this new infrastructure."
Much of the backbone of Gigabit Seattle's initial network will use publicly owned fiber optic cable already available in Seattle; it's a direct outgrowth of Mayor McGinn's initiative to expand ultra high speed broadband access by tapping into this underutilized resource. If the demand is there, Gigabit Seattle plans to lay down fiber to expand into additional neighborhoods. Hopefully, mine.
