According to the National Endowment for the Arts, there are exactly 50,570. That puts Washington State at 10th in the nation in terms of the number of artists in its workforce.

And, as WonkBlog already discovered, it's a bit mesmerizing to dig further into this new government data on where the the nation's two million working artists live, how much they're paid, and what types of art they're making. (The cities with the highest concentrations of working artists: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Fe.)
