The first paragraph of this New York Times story reads like a joke, but it's not:

An attempt on Tuesday by House Republicans to show that they were at least somewhat open to an overhaul of immigration laws was overshadowed by comments from Representative Steve King of Iowa, who said that some undocumented immigrants had “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

I've said this a whole lot, but since they're not getting the message I'll repeat it: The Republican Party has to make an active effort to toss out the racists if they want to appeal to minority voters. You have to earn that kind of trust, you can't just talk your way into it.
