Obama Messing With Texas, Specifically: Despite a recent Supreme Court decision that scotched an operative portion of the Voting Rights Act, the Obama administration will ask a judge to require the Lone Star State—which is currently trying to suppress minority voter turnout—to seek federal pre-clearance before tweaking rules:

“Based on the evidence of intentional racial discrimination….as well as the history of pervasive voting-related discrimination against racial minorities that the Supreme Court itself has recognized, we believe that the state of Texas should be required to go through a preclearance process whenever it changes its voting laws and practices,” [Attoreney General Eric] Holder said.

Last Chance to Undermine Obamacare: Republicans will hold town halls in places where voters are racist dislike the president's health care law, criticizing the individual mandate to get health insurance. But they must move quickly; in October, many people will start to receive subsidized health insurance for the first time. As one conservative analyst told Reuters, "The fear is that the law will start to work and people will like it. They'll like having insurance, a safety net if you lose your job. Then Republicans are stuck with it."

Derailment in Spain: At least 80 are dead in train catastrophe.

No Longer Hedging: Feds announce criminal charges against SAC Capital, the hedge fund that allegedly engaged in insider trading for more than 20 years.

The Medical Marijuana Raids Yesterday: There's a skosh more detail in the news today, but until we see details of the charges, I'm not going to point any fingers. The Feds have reiterated in the recent so-called Ogden and Cole memos that while marijuana is illegal federally, they will generally respect state medical marijuana laws, provided that operators follow the rules of their own state. If they don't follow those rules, enforcement is a matter for federal agents and prosecutors. In general, running a drug operation with hundreds—or thousand—of customers, huge sums of money, and pounds of drugs is a matter for the Feds, not for state law enforcement.

Useless "Favoriting" Feature Reportedly All the Rage on Twitter: "The Twitter feature allows users to mark with a star icon tweets they find amusing or useful. Doing so both bookmarks the tweet and alerts its creator that they appreciate the sentiment without republishing it in their own streams."

Useless Poll on Anthony Weiner: Fox Nation conducts a poll on whether he should drop out of the race. A national poll. On whether he should drop out of the New York City mayor's race. Texas, California, Minnesota, Maryland, and Rhode Island all think he should drop out, for what it isn't worth.

In Better News from the Same Poll: Dozens of states think Edward Snowden, who is a hero, should receive asylum.
