Endorsements are flooding into the Seattle mayor's race—laborers, neighbors, and even Neighbours—and this marijuana microbus in Belltown is joining the fray... by endorsing Bruce Harrell for mayor!

Marijuana Microbus

The bus materialized last month in a parking lot on the corner of Denny Way and Vine Street near the Seattle Center. Two weeks later, a sign showed up supporting Harrell's campaign. Curious about the political opinions held by this vehicular member of the cannabis community, I contacted Karl Keich, director of Seattle Medical Marijuana Association, the medical pot shop that parked the bus.

"That's my bus," Keich admits. "It was kind of a grassroots marketing campaign, no pun intended."

And why does the marijuana microbus support Bruce Harrell—who is currently a Seattle City Council member—for mayor? "He's been supportive of what we do," says Keich, adding, "One of my good friends works for him." (So it seems the marijuana microbus has connections.)

Will the marijuana microbus consider endorsing other candidates for public office? "We'd have to see what the candidate has to say," says Keich. "Not at this time."

Keich hasn't figured out the gas mileage on the microbus, but tells me its a 1977 Volkswagen Transporter. He thinks we should call it the Cannabus, despite him vinyl wrapping it with about a dozen instances of the word "marijuana." He bought it specifically to advertise his dispensary and intends to move it to Capitol Hill for this weekend's Block Party.

Anything else the marijuana microbus wants people to know? "Medical marijuana is something that is important, it greatly improves the quality of peoples' lives, and it is essential for patients to have access to people who can help them understand the plant."

An informal survey of political analysts finds the marijuana microbus endorsement could greatly increase Harrell's poll numbers among Volkswagen microbuses.
