"It's just what paintings look like," says Kimberly Trowbridge, laughing, referring to the blurry painting-of-paintings, above. "Battle. Flesh. Sky."
Today, the Seattle artist leaves for a six-week trip to Spain including a monthlong painting residency. While she's gone, her new show at Blindfold Gallery—Story Tell Her—is very much still here, through October 5.
It's a tight but sprawling exhibition that sees the artist, whose work is usually super-confident and composed (and sometimes, as in that link, enormous in size), grappling to communicate—inventing new languages for herself and presenting them to a viewer in small pieces, and also trying to understand her own love for distant things, especially paintings that are centuries old.
I'll write more about the show soon. But here's one more teaser image.
