Simon Doonan, as I mentioned in a recent-ish Worn Out column, is the hot-shit window dresser, style-commentator, writer, media personality, and Creative Ambassador at Large to Barneys New York. He’s also funny and brilliant and weird, and he just published a severely terrific book, The Asylum: A Collage of Couture Reminiscences…and Hysteria to commemorate his dealings in the fashion industry with all its hostility, overfragrancing, searing beauty, and ridiculous madness.

There are piercing insights: “Mother Teresa was kind, but was she chic? Maybe in a drapey Japanese avant-garde kind of way, but not in the Chanel/Babe Paley/Anna Wintour sense of the word.” There are great ideas: “I suggest that the collective noun for lesbians might be a ‘carpal tunnel’ of lesbians.” And there’s plenty of budget-friendly fashion advice, like: “tie the two front shirttails into a sassy knot.”

Doonan is hosting a book signing today at Barneys downtown. Go see him. 5–7 pm, Barneys New York Seattle, 600 Pine St, 888-222-7639.
