Not only is the war not over, many have forgotten why it began, who we are fighting, and how much the whole bloody thing has cost us so far. On top of that, much of the cost for the endless war has taken the form of debt sold to those who are lucky enough to have loadable capital at their disposal. So we are not only paying for the contracts that supply and maintain the war machine (men, bases, and equipment), but also for the interest on that growing debt. As the economist Costas Lapavitsas writes in his book Profiting Without Production: "State bonds are the bedrock of the financial markets.."
