  • Live musical accompaniment to silent films! Musical duo Miles and Karina provide the musical backdrop to The Sound of Silents series at SIFF Cinema. The next screening is a Sunday program of Lotte Reiniger’s short silhouette style animated films from the 1920s—they're impressive and intricately designed. The third film in the series is our Stranger Suggests event for Tuesday—read more about it here.
  • Kelly O, aka Kelly "Riverdance" O'Neil, is going to buy the biggest slab of corned beef she can afford from Market House Corned Beef on Howell Street (next the Re-Bar). She's going to cook it, eat it, and raise a glass of Bushmills to all the O'Neil's (even the ones with two L's). Slàinte, motherfuckers!

    • GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Peculiar.

  • The big movie event this weekend is the release of Wes Anderson’s newest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel. It's playing at two multiplexes, but Guild 45th in Wallingford is probably the most charming place to see it. Say what you will about his visual aesthetic—some think he's too indulgent, or that his movies are too precious—but he's a talented director creating work that is uniquely his own and he has a peculiar cinematic DNA that I love to experience.
  • Danielle Henderson is going to eat a plate of bacon at Mecca, then get stoned and go to the top of the Space Needle for the first time.

  • You should totally see Los Angeles Plays Itself, a 3 hour-long documentary from 2003 that examines the ways in which Los Angeles is depicted in film, drawing all of its video from the countless films that have been created in LA over the years. This film is like a short class on cinema, and since the director drew liberally from Hollywood films without acquiring the rights to them it's only around for a limited run. A new digital restoration of the film is being shown at the Northwest Film Forum, Saturday and Sunday at 7 pm only!
  • Christopher Frizzelle is going to see the new Wes Anderson movie tomorrow, and then heading to underwear night at The Eagle.
  • There seems to be a St. Patrick’s Day pet costume contest happening this weekend, if you've decided your pet is into that sort of thing.
  • Kyle Fleck is thinking about eating some steak frites at that Red Cow place that just opened up near his house.
  • Paul Constant is going to make a boiled dinner with corned beef and potatoes and cabbage and the works! Then he's going to read a lot of books. "I'm planning on finishing The Snowden Files by Luke Harding, but I haven't planned what else I'm going to dive into."

    • BROUWER'S CAFÉ The perfect place to unwind after hunting wild boar

  • You should be drinking at the Hard Liver Barley Wine Festival at Brouwer's Café in Fremont. Brouwer's is wonderful, and probably the closest we’ll come to one of Beowulf’s mead halls here in Seattle. The barley wine is deliciously sweet, bitter, and strong, and this event will likely be crowded.
  • Check out this Facebook page featuring high quality historical photos of Seattle if you're staying at home. We’re on our third iteration of the Central Public library right now!
  • Charles Mudede is going to get drunk at the back of Saint Johns. Spring is here.
