1. Mitt Romney continues his curious "victory lap" by going full Kreskin:

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Sunday suggested that he had a power to “see the future,” and could have stopped Russia from invading Crimea if he had been elected in 2012... “I think effective leaders typically are able to see the future to a certain degree, and are able to take actions to shape it in some way,” he added. “And that’s, of course, what this president has failed to do. And as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton as well."

2. Republican 2016 hopefuls are trying to win the support of Sheldon Adelson, the man who kept Newt Gingrich propped up for three months during the 2012 Republican presidential primary. Jeb Bush has already approached Adelson, and now all the other wannabes are getting into the act:

On Saturday, three other prominent hopefuls — Govs. Chris Christie of New Jersey, John Kasich of Ohio and Scott Walker of Wisconsin — will address the broader gathering [of Adelson's group the Republican Jewish Coalition] at Adelson’s hotel, the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.

3. I wonder if Republicans will call Nate Silver's polls skewed this time? On Silver's new FiveThirtyEight site, he's issued a prediction for November's midterm senatorial elections:

When FiveThirtyEight last issued a U.S. Senate forecast — way back in July — we concluded the race for Senate control was a toss-up. That was a little ahead of the conventional wisdom at the time, which characterized the Democrats as vulnerable but more likely than not to retain the chamber.

Our new forecast goes a half-step further: We think the Republicans are now slight favorites to win at least six seats and capture the chamber.

Midterm elections, especially in a president's second term, almost always go poorly for the party that holds the presidency. This doesn't mean Democrats should just give up—never underestimate the ability of Republicans to fuck up when they think they're on top—but it also doesn't mean that the nation is about to undergo a significant long-term rightward shift, either. The important thing is this: Don't panic.
