Playwright Beats Poet, Novelist, and Drag Queen: The surprise winner of last night's A Poet, a Playwright, a Novelist, and a Drag Queen competition was playwright (and Stranger contributor) Spike Friedman, who delivered a monologue from the point of view of Business, which someone at the reading described as "sort of like Montgomery Burns meets an incensed Bob Odenkirk." Sarah Galvin, who The Stranger considered to be the odds-on favorite to win the event, leapt out of a suitcase during her presentation. This event was part of the weeklong APRIL Festival; you can read about all the other upcoming events in Suggests and in the book section.

Seagull Flies to Uzbekistan: The Seagull Project, a Seattle-based company that lives the old-world dream by rehearsing Chekhov plays for months and months, is taking its production of The Seagull to Tashkent, Uzbekistan to perform at the Ilkhom Theater. Ilkhom came to Seattle back in 2008, just six months after its artistic director Mark Weil was murdered at the entrance to his apartment building, possibly for political reasons—Weil and Ilkhom had a history of outraging Communist apparatchiks, Muslim fundamentalists, and members of the Uzbek dictatorship. The Seagull Project's methods were inspired, in part, by Weil—their trip is a kind of homage.

Too Many Goddamned Readings This Week: It was overshadowed by APRIL Festival events, but if you're looking for a fun reading tonight, you should also consider attending Lit Fix at the Rendezvous Jewelbox Theater, which features very good readers Maged Zaher and Nicole Hardy, among others. This is Lit Fix's best lineup yet, and we wish the series best of luck with their next year of programming.

Canada Shames America Again: Canada is putting Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro's face on a $5 coin. I'm still waiting for my William Faulkner fifty cent piece, America.

The Vice Bubble: Vice Media co-founder Shane Smith suggested that his company could become as valuable as Twitter. Melville House's indispensible Moby Lives blog points out that this is pretty much impossible. Good luck playing the stock market, Shane!
