  • NEWTIMES The view through the art world's newest front door.

After so much death, it's nice to see a little birth in the Seattle art gallery ranks. Leary Gallery, on Leary Way near the industrial-retail zone of Ballard (read: Fred Meyer, BevMo!), opened Saturday with a group show called It Is Always Now featuring some Seattle greats: Evan Blackwell, Linda Davidson, Mary Iverson.

I stopped by yesterday hoping for a glimpse but the gallery's only regular hours are Tuesday evenings (4-7), and Saturday afternoons (12-5).

The man behind Leary is painter Randy McCoy, who used to show at Fetherston Gallery (1997-2014). Artists are just about the only ones willing to get into the tough Seattle art-dealing business these days, it seems. Leary sounds comparable to Sharon Arnold's LxWxH Gallery in Georgetown, which also had an opening Saturday night—for Seattle's Claire Johnson, another local highlight. It Is Always Now is up through May 10, with a closing reception that night at 6.
