In this police report, we see a police officer making contact with a man on the street ("Hey, you there!") because of a law that is useless and should be abandoned by all big cities: The law that criminalizes drinking in public.

I contacted suspect/Gray for drinking from an open container of a 24 oz can of Modelo at Broadway and East Pine Street. A routine records check via patrol car MDT returned the above listed warrant...

Let's ignore the warrant and focus instead on the reason why the officer contacted the man on the street in the first place—he was seen to be holding an open can (or bottle) of Modelo beer. Prohibitions of this nature are just inappropriate for a big city. We can expect the wholesome folks of a small town to be worried about who is drinking in the woods or the side of the road or where ever they might chance to see other humans behaving in ways that offend their sensibilities and customs. But not the inhabitants of Seattle. We are dense, we are busy, we have other things to worry about.

Also, this regulation against public boozing has a bad smell that was blown to us from the tiresome country of Christian morality. We should freshen our city air by bringing an end to these odious and unhelpful regulations. Parks love drinkers.
