Experimental-music festival Substrata 1.4 returns for its fourth year July 17-19 at Chapel Performance Space. Curated by Rafael Anton Irisarri, Substrata this year features Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio (aka Finnish minimalist-techno producer Ø), Kompakt Records' Pop Ambient mainstay Markus Guentner, cellist Julia Kent (ex-Rasputina), Windy & Carl's dream-drone guitarist Carl Hultgren, Australian composer/multi-instrumentalist Sanso-Xtro, Mountains member Koen Holtkamp, LA-based minimalist digital composer Akira Rabelais, Evan Caminiti (guitarist for San Francisco space rockers Barn Owl), and heavy chamber-rock Seattle duo Mamiffer. Read more about the artists here.

Substrata is being funded by an Indiegogo campaign. You can purchase tickets for the fest at substratafestival.com. Irisarri stresses that "All tickets for the event are pre-sale only. Substrata tickets are LTD edition – the last three editions have all sold-out. There will be no tickets at the door. Please do not arrive without a ticket."

Press release after the jump.

For this year’s edition, we are happy to continue our three-day performance program and bring unique international talent to our city; combining cutting-edge electronic music artists and modern classical composers with drone and ambient musicians to create an immersive weekend experience in an intimate setting.

In addition to the evening events, Substrata will be hosting a 'sonic retreat' on the Olympic Peninsula July 20 – 21. It'll feature an overnight camping field recording workshop with Koen Holtkamp, along with some of the artists performing at the festival. Tickets for this event will be sold separately starting June 1.

We would like to invite all to partake in our fundraising campaign, essential in making this edition possible: any donation, no matter how small, helps us! As many of you know, Substrata prides itself in been a crowd-funded event, lacking any corporate sponsors, thus having the audience vote with their wallets.

It’s been a pleasure organizing what promises to be another memorable Substrata. We hope you’ll enjoy the programming this year. Expect a seamless blend of minimalist, electroacoustic, drone, ambient, experimental, and neoclassical styles, all representing different shades of what is a very diverse global artistic community.
