- MAY DAY Ended with one trash can being set on fire and an hours-long dance party in the street. Marchers and police were more restrained than in previous years.
All of Yesterday's May Day Arrests Were Men: Between the ages of 17 and 23, except for one 37-year-old. Here's a list of what they were arrested for at SeattlePi.com. The El Comité march for immigrant rights earlier in the day was smaller than last year's.
- Protesters who showed up late and had to ask cops which way to go.
Mayor Murray's $15 Minimum Wage Deal as Described in the New York Times: The paper of record calls it "a liberal Democratic agenda at the frontier of social and economic engineering." The paper doesn't properly credit Kshama Sawant for essentially forcing Murray into supporting a $15 minimum wage during the last election campaign. Sawant said at a march yesterday that the $15 deal is "the result of pressure by our movement. The movement has made sure that business dare not openly oppose the demand for $15." But she's not so into the mayor's plan, primarily because she doesn't think big business needs a three-year phase-in. "Every year of a phase-in means yet another year in poverty for a worker," she says. She's encouraged gathering signatures for a potential ballot initiative, but David Rolf of the SEIU says "certainly the labor movement is not going to support a ballot measure fight."
