COUNTRY LIPS' WHISKEY-SOAKED, TOTALLY UNSUCKY ROCK

(Tractor) Eight-piece Seattle rowdy boys the Country Lips make classic, rebellious country-western music THAT DOESN’T SUCK. I know most country music gets a bad rap as redneck-Republican sappy crap—but trust me, these guys smash the mold and make music aimed straight for every modern roots country revivalist’s heart. Tonight marks the release of their second album, Nothing to My Name, which was recorded by Lips vocalist/guitarist Hamilton Boyce; mixed by Stuart Sikes (who’s also worked with Loretta Lynn, White Stripes, Cat Power, and Modest Mouse); and mastered by Ed Brooks (the Moondoggies, Pearl Jam, and Fleet Foxes). For tonight’s show, bring your best dancin’ boots, and don’t be afraid to do a whiskey shot or three. KELLY O

PAGANFEST V: TURISAS ARE FINNISH FOLK-METAL WARRIORS

(El Corazon) Folk metal is a curious genre, combining the banjos-and-accordions world of folk with the fire-and-screaming one of metal. At its best, it augments metal’s pure, ferocious energy with a deep respect for land and ancestors, imbuing that ferocity with something like real purpose. In that vein, Turisas are basically Finland made flesh. Named for the Finnish god of war, they perform in armor and vivid war paint, thundering out anthems of strength and solidarity. Vocalist Mathias Nygård can bellow with the best of them, as well as singing in a commanding baritone—I regularly get the urge to charge into battle behind him, which is inconvenient when sitting in traffic. Incorporating flutes, strings, horns, accordions, hand drums, and chants, Turisas make the kind of strange, multi-layered metal that doesn’t get nearly enough traction in America. Go see them at Paganfest for your full dose of folk-infused brutality. KATIE ALLISON

A BENEFIT FOR OSO WITH THE PRESIDENTS, DUFF MCKAGAN AND MORE

In the continued efforts to help our neighbors in Oso, Washington, after its tragic mudslide in March, the Triple Door will be hosting acoustic sets by a variety of Northwest talent. The bill includes Guns N’ Roses/Loaded all-star Duff McKagan, ’90s fun heroes the Presidents of the United States of America, shadowy-twang wrangler and former Screaming Trees drummer Mark Pickerel, the velvet-voiced singer/songwriter Shelby Earl, and many more. There will also be a chance to win an acoustic guitar signed by McKagan and PUSA! That’ll look great in any living room. And if you can’t make it to the show, it’ll be streaming live online for the public with the option to donate, of course. All proceeds will be donated to the United Way of Snohomish County.
