Please read Dominic's post on the horribly poor state of public transportation in Seattle. The situation is only getting worse, as this weekend proved, and there is no real solution to this problem in the works. None at all. My feeling is that the city has failed to escape the grip of the 20th century and its car-centered urbanism. However, Portland and (more so) Vancouver have demonstrated that they are in tune with the 21st century understanding that density is deeply incompatible with cars. And this is at a time when Seattle's core is growing faster than its suburbs, which, weirdly enough, is not the case with even Portland (PDF). And the coming cuts on the sorry public transportation system we currently have only shows that we have too much voting and not enough democracy in this region.
