Certain nerdy sectors of the music world are all aflutter today due to Warp Records posting a track on YouTube from Aphex Twin's Syro album (out Sept. 22). This is the first new Aphex Twin release since 2001's Drukqs, and, to put it lightly, his large, loyal fan base is rather eager to absorb these new creations. (Note that some of these tracks reportedly have been sitting around for years; he supposedly has about five albums' worth of diverse material in the can.)

"minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]" features Richard D. James' distorted voice dripping strange pathos over a familiar Aphex-ian chord progression (optimistically melancholic), medium-energy, quasi-funky beats, and a lovely, undulating piano motif. Sure, it's a solid cut, but not exactly bursting with the wild inventiveness that anyone who's been immersed in the English producer's catalog would expect after this long of a silence. Perhaps Warp or James has decided not to give us the illest shit till the official release date. Because I have to believe that over the last 13 years, RDJ has concocted at least a hard drive's worth of far-fucking-out tracks that will have minds boggling like they've never boggled before. Patience...
